McKenzie Munchies !!Had a visit to Fairlie Bakehouse and Mt Cook Takeaways today.
Fairlie Bakehouse was not as good as I remembered. Price was near $9. Got a Pork Belly pie and an American Donut. $16 buck somethin’. Pie was average size, a lot of apple. Not bad but lid wasn’t attached at all. Pastry was good !! American Donut light and soft. Names of pies were on the wall so You don’t know what they look Ike as warmer is in the middle. 7/10. Tad overrated but very busy. No time to think as your just getting pushed through.
Chinese - Bami Goreng and chicken fried rice. Best we have had in a long time, firing could do with a little more heat but very good. A lot of flavour without adding heaps of sauce for the fried rice. Price is $20 each so bit expensive compared to small towns. 8.2/10

Slightly less exciting post but worthy of a mention. Cobb and Co in Dunedin. I wasn’t even aware of this still being around. 30 years later I re-enter. Large building, kid friendly with toys and IPads. Robots deliver your meals. Service was friendly and fast. B**r menu lacks a bit. Too many steak options so we got a pork belly and a Thai fried rice. Next time will be fish of the day and steak !!! Kids got kid meals but didn’t read menu properly thinking I was getting a combo but ended up stinging a hole in the wallet. Mains were in the low 30s. Happy to go back

Turret Takeaways Oamaru 7/10

After a short Hiatus due to health I am back eating. Driving through Oamaru to Dunedin we decided to tick into a feed at the Turret Takeaways. Total cost $81. Included chicken fried rice, sweet n sour pork, Cambodian satay burger, 3 fish, battered o Ian sausage, plain sausage, 2 donuts and 3 scoops of chips.
The good - sweet n sour pork, chips, fish (thin shark but tasted okbattered onion sausage was different. Home made but better than precooked pre-made ones.
The bad - chicken fried rice tasted and smelt like I had made it at home with soy, oyster sauce and sesame oil.
Would I go back, yes but would order some different items. I had stopped off on way through before and rice wasn’t like this so bad day. Overall 7/10

Ashburton Pie Lovers !! I have tried them all up here. Last Thursday I entered Mr Man’s Bakery & Cafe.
Very old school. Pie variety what I would expect in 1990. Which isn’t bad !!! Service was faultless. Price was the best I have encountered between Dunedin and Christchurch.
I ordered steak and cheese, pepper steak, caramel slice and a can of v for $21.50.
Steak and Cheese. You could see the cheese on the inside . What a rarity. Pastry nice, size average. Solid 7.5/10
Pepper Steak Pie. As ordered. Pepper and steak chunks. Another 7.5.
Slice caught me off guard. I thought originally it was stale with how crispy the bottom was. Then I realised it was supposed to be like that. 7.5/10 for $4.50.
Pies at $6.50 make it cheap as. In my opinion and my opinion only best in Ashburton. Obviously if you want gourmet flavours you need to venture out but price/service/as advertised by a country mile the better of the three . Come at me with the hatred!! This is based Ashburton only!!

Ceylon 85 !! Where have you been all my life? Sri Lankan cuisine is yummy. Service here is top notch ! B**r is cold. Price is very fair. If in doubt go to buffet at night time. Crab curry, lunch special of rice, 2 curry samples, paratha and drink. 2 beers and a noodle dish for $80. Can’t wait to take this bogan body back and put myself back to sleep in a food c**a

The Big One. Oamaru’s chosen bakery of the bogan and the under 30. The spot they stop at on the way to the meat works after a Oamaru bender ! Now am I comparing Oamaru bakeries to Timaru? No way outright loss.
Pork Belly Pie, Lamb Pie (woolly something), caramel crumble slice.
Pastry is nice here, soft not to dry. Bottoms soft. Other than the highest price in Oamaru my next pet peeve is adding things to fill out pies without being in the title. If I buy a pork belly pie, it should be the main ingredient. Apple was . The lamb pie had right amount of mint, not too much but more vege than anything. Don’t get me wrong, a slight title change and primo. Both pies were tasty. I see why it’s popular. Slice was on point. Coming back for the big steak and cheese off to compare Oamaru and Timaru Steak n Cheese Pies in-depth. Pork Pie 6.5/10. (Price high, large amounts of apple, gravy average) Wooly lamb pie 8/10 good chunks of lamb, perfect balance, lost two points due to excess vege, price and size. Good job Delectables !! Slice 9/10. Yummy. Size as good as I have come across!!! Service good
