10/08/2019 BASANTAPUR DURBAR SQUARE
ZY started as a chai & coffee place by founder Enayat Shah in the busy & bustling Basantapur durbar square in Kathmandu. Surrounded by historical & religious landmarks Basantapur is visited by thousands of people everyday from every age, every walk of life carrying, undoubtedly, many colorful stories & thoughts within them.
So as a way to get to know the minds of hundreds of visitors at ZY everyday he put up a blank canvas there so that people could express themselves.
He started making functional products using the same canvas and also other inspiration drawn from Basantapur.
Enayat always knew he wanted to do something in Basantapur as a way to give back to the place that filled him with so much inspiration and that’s where the idea for this show came about.
The whole idea behind doing this show was to go against the norms of how, where and why should a fashion event be done.
Core members behind ZY street style show were founder Shah, head designer Aashirwad Zirel assisted by Subbi Manandhar and creative director Aastha Pokharel.
we knew we wanted to do it in Basantapur dabali and to get the permission to do a show in a world heritage site sharing the space with a living goddess was an honour for us.
so when we got the opportunity to do this we all agreed that it should be a chance to unleash our imagination and creativity and showcase something that feeds your senses and mind in a way that is unusual and unforgettable. It was not commercially motivated so we did not look for any sponsors, didn’t focus on big promotion or high profile invitees.
The motive for our first show wasn’t to make noise or create hype. It was to show you fashion, art, music and theatrics presented together in our own way.
A journey from imagination to reality. Everything was envisioned, designed and executed at Home that turned into a studio in the months leading up to the event.
Our honorary artists who painted our backdrop for the show live were kids from paragon protalus foundation.
we believe children are the most imaginative artists as their minds are not yet tainted and limited by the constraints of the worlds opinion on what can and cannot be considered art.
Kichaa man Chitrakar and Amit Sinha (Aid Ray) were long time friends and both are amazingly talented. A musician & a poet. this was a perfect opportunity to collaborate with them and they agreed to record a track for the show and also perform live. It really brought life to the event.
ZY is going online soon, products and apparel will be available for purchase.
The said collection is not for sale but we are open for the right collaborations and excited for what’s next.
