"Civic pride is not about slogans, it is about habits."

I came across a story about Japanese football fans staying behind after matches to clean the stadium. It reminded me of something I have been saying for years in Nepal: big visions and big aspirations are achieved when we learn to do the small things right.

I have seen professionals throw trash on the street. I have seen students toss garbage out of school buses, only to participate in Environment Day rallies a few days later. Celebrating June 5 is not enough. Caring for the environment has to become a habit.

A few days ago, while driving with my family, I saw a mother unwrap a chewing gum and throw the plastic onto the road. I stopped and politely requested that she pick it up. She refused. I then told her, “Balen Shah is not going to come and pick this up.”
She kept walking ignoring my request. I felt really sorry for her son who was following her during the whole conversation.

That moment reminded me of an important truth: the future of Nepal will not be determined only by the people sitting in Singha Durbar. It will be determined by the mindset of ordinary Nepalis—as citizens, parents, neighbors, and community builders.

Too often we look for someone else to fix our problems. Yet nation-building begins with personal responsibility. It begins when we decide not to litter. It begins when we respect public spaces. It begins when we think about how our actions affect others.

The same principle applies beyond garbage. Whether it is responsible use of social media, respecting people's privacy, or contributing positively to our communities, every small action shapes the society we become.

We may not have the authority to tell others what to do. But we always have the ability to lead by example. Pick up a piece of trash. Keep your surroundings clean. Show kindness. If others follow, wonderful. If not, be patient and keep doing the right thing.

The Japanese are teaching the world that civic pride is not about slogans; it is about habits.

Imagine if all of us in Nepal embraced that same mindset. Our streets would be cleaner, our communities stronger, and our dreams for the nation much closer to reality.

Nobody can predict how the 48 teams will do at the FIFA World Cup this summer, but if you wanted to gamble on Japan being the tidiest team, you’d surely clean up at the bookies. Thanks to a societal expectation of all Japanese people, you’d never know they were there.

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Greg, a former Army Commander from New Zealand, who discovered Coffee at Anu Books during his business visit to Nepal. He was fascinated by our little space dedicated to books, conversations, and creative thinking.

Together, we explored the timeless beauty of Patan Durbar Square, wandered through its ancient alleys and vibrant markets, and visited the magnificent Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar). Along the way, we shared the stories of Rato Machhindranath, Banglamukhi, and the rich traditions that have shaped Patan for centuries. Every corner had a story to tell, and every story revealed another layer of Nepal’s identity. As I narrated these stories, I found myself reliving my own memories of Patan—friends, family, familiar streets, and the moments that have made this city such an important part of my life.

It reminded me that storytelling is far more than entertainment. It is one of the most powerful tools for building trust and understanding. In business, negotiations are rarely just about numbers or contracts—they are about people. When you understand the stories, culture, values, and perspectives of the other side, conversations become more meaningful, partnerships become stronger, and opportunities unfold more naturally.

Every place has a story. Every person has a story. The more we understand the story behind people and places, the stronger our relationships become.

Wishing Greg every success in his venture in Nepal. Thank you for allowing Coffee at Anu Books to be a small part of your Nepal journey. I look forward to many more walks, conversations, and stories that connect people from around the world.

Some of the most meaningful conversations about Nepal’s future don’t happen in conference halls. They happen around books.

Today, we welcomed 23 bright Grade 10 girls from Bauddha School to Coffee at Anu Books. As they prepare to step into a new chapter of life, I shared one simple message:

Whatever you become, never stop being friends with books.

Life is rarely a straight line. The unexpected turns, the difficult choices, and the moments of uncertainty are often the ones that shape our character. Face them with curiosity, emotional intelligence, courage, and compassion.

I shared my own journey, recited the poem Endurance, and reminded them that Nepal needs a generation that is not only intelligent but also empathetic, hardworking, globally aware, and deeply committed to serving society.

Books don’t just help us pass exams—they help us understand people, broaden our horizons, and become better human beings.

That’s the community we hope to build at Coffee at Anu Books: one where stories inspire purpose, conversations create connection, and young minds discover their potential.

Leadership is the courage to step forward amidst uncertainty, to inspire others with a vision larger than themselves, and to guide people with empathy, compassion, and purpose. A leader must be willing to take bold decisions, embrace innovation, and venture beyond the comfort zone while remaining deeply connected to the aspirations and challenges of those they serve.

Leadership is ultimately about seeing possibilities where others see obstacles and mobilizing collective effort to transform those possibilities into reality.

In this regard, Henry Kissinger exemplified remarkable leadership. Through strategic foresight, intellectual rigor, and an unwavering ability to navigate complex global challenges, he demonstrated how leaders can shape history by combining vision with decisive action, leaving an enduring impact far beyond their own time.

Blodeuwedd is owl in the language of present day. And for that reason birds are hostile to the owl. And the owl is still called blodeuwedd.

The field of artificial intelligence has made no progress because there is an unsolved philosophical problem at its heart: we do not understand how creativity works.
