The Sharjah Booksellers Conference is not about business alone. It feels more like a reunion of a global family—people from different parts of the world coming together to share challenges, opportunities, ideas, and a common question: How do we sustain the book and publishing industry and pass it on, in the best possible way, to the next generation?

To do that, we need imagination, creativity, and innovation—but also models that are economically viable and sustainable.

What makes this gathering truly special is the cross-pollination of knowledge, ideas, and literature. Books carry stories, cultures, and imagination across borders. They help us see beyond our own world—and imagine beyond the universe.

What a wonderful way to bring people together.

Thank you to the sharjahbookauthority and the entire organizing team for the warmth, friendship, learning, and incredible hospitality.

And thank you to Anu Books & Coffee at Anu Books for giving me the opportunity to proudly represent Nepal and share our activities, experiences, and ideas on such a global platform.

As the African proverb reminds us:
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Perhaps the future of books is exactly that—going further, together.

What if children could imagine what comes after a disaster?
Our storyteller, Amir R. Thapa, organized a storytelling and imagination session with Grade 6 students at Ullens Kathmandu as part of their Literary Week.

As an Environmental Scientist, Amir was inspired by the recent disaster in Rasuwa and wanted to tell the students a different kind of story—a story of science, curiosity and possibility.

The session was carefully curated not to become a conversation about disaster, loss or fear.
Instead, it created a space where children could ask questions, become curious about the mountains and rivers around us, and then turn their attention toward the future.
We explored how a mountain can move, how rivers can change, and how one event in the Himalaya can affect communities far downstream.

Then came the most important part.
The children were invited to imagine Rasuwa in 2040.
They were no longer simply listening to a story about something that had happened.

They were imagining what could be built.
Where would the schools be?

What would the bridges look like?
How would communities know when a river was rising?
Where would children play?

What would make a community not only safer, but happier?
The students responded through stories, drawings, maps, ideas and inventions.

There was a shift in attention—from “What happened?” to “What could be possible?”

For us, that is the value of storytelling with children.
It gives them a way to understand the world around them, but also the permission to imagine the world they want to live in.
This session was not about having answers.

It was about bringing young minds into a conversation about Nepal’s future.

And perhaps that is where we need to begin more often—not by telling children what the future will look like, but by asking them:

“What does your Nepal look like?”
