Kleinod
Kleinod is the jazz project of saxophonist Felician Honsig-Erlenburg. The quartet explores the compositional possibilities of a two-horn front line with bass and drums.
Kleinod’s music is influenced by traditional saxophone trio line-ups. The style and forms of the playing stand on their own, however, as much of the music stems from the personal and musical experiences of the bandleader. There is attention given to both composition and improvisational play.
Honsig-Erlenburg is a graduate of Berklee College of Music and recipient of the Berklee Charlie Parker Award and the Leiden Jazz Award Persprijs. His work has also been recognised by the Vienna-based Hans-Koller Prize jury, who noted:
“His sound is as convincing as his groove, his improvisations are full of motivic logic, and his compositions reflect musical maturity and a considerable breadth of vision.”
As a performer, he has appeared at venues and festivals including Porgy & Bess, Bimhuis, Music Village, the Carinthian Summer, Jazz Over Villach, and the Beijing Nine Gates Jazz Festival.
Kleinod has released four albums—Kleinod I, Kleinod II, Erlenblow, and Apes Do Dream—documenting the group’s evolving language. Silent Flux, an album that focuses more on composition was released on Sessionwork Records under a different band name but in a similar spirit.
They have collaborated with Lukas König, Martin Eberle, Jiří Slavík, Alois Eberl, Attila Gyárfás, Kenji Herbert.
The group appeals to listeners of contemporary European acoustic jazz.
