After almost four years of sharing recipes and cooking together, we recently sat down and asked ourselves: what is something people often ask us about, but we rarely get to share?
We realised that perhaps it is not another recipe or another dish, but everything that happens behind the recipe — the techniques, the principles and the ways of thinking about food that allow us to become more creative in our own kitchens.
So, for our new workshop series, we are moving a little beyond kimbap, kimchi and banchan. Instead of teaching you what to cook, we want to explore how to think, experiment and create with food.
What fascinates us most is that everyone comes from a different kitchen. We carry memories of our mothers, our childhoods, our cultures and the foods that shaped us. We all have different palates and different stories around the table, and we believe that is exactly what makes cooking so exciting.
The more we understand the core techniques, the more freedom we have to experiment, combine our own memories with new ideas and perhaps create something that is uniquely ours.
We are starting this new journey with two workshops:
🌶️ 26 September — THE JANG TABLEExploring Ganjang, Doenjang & Gochujang beyond the traditional kitchen — from banchan and main dishes to desserts and drinks.
🌿 10 October — BALHYO 발효The Art of Fermentation — discovering how vegetables, fruits and other ingredients transform through technique, time and nature.
And there are two more surprise workshops coming in November & December.
If you are curious about food beyond the recipe and love the idea of experimenting, discovering and creating together, we would love to have you at the table.
Come with your curiosity. We’ll bring the food. 🤍

A little detour to Japan. 🇯🇵

Our summer of collaborations continues — and this time, we’re travelling somewhere very close to our hearts. Japan is one of those places we’ve returned to again and again. We’ve travelled there many times, and somehow, every time we go back, there’s this familiar feeling of home.
The quiet mornings.
The little neighbourhood restaurants.
The comfort of a warm bowl of food.
And simply the way 家庭料理 (katei ryōri) — Japanese home cooking — can make something so simple feel so special.

And lately, we’ve also found ourselves falling into another little Japanese obsession: matcha and hojicha. 🍵Luckily, we don’t have to travel all the way to Japan for this one. We’re very lucky to have a dear friend, Lacha, who has been bringing beautiful matcha and hojicha powders all the way from Japan — and, even more importantly, patiently teaching us how to make them properly.

So we thought… why not bring all of this together? This weekend, we’re turning Mamabowls into a little Japanese corner for our Japanese Weekend Pop-up. 🇯🇵

Together with Lacha, we’ll be serving his special matcha & hojicha drinks, alongside a whole weekend menu inspired by the Japanese foods we’ve loved, eaten, and missed during our travels — the kind of food that makes you feel a little closer to home.

Friday – Sunday | 10:00–20:00| Wageningen
Come by for a drink, stay for some food, discover something new, or simply hang out with us for a little while. And yes… we’ll also be practicing some Japanese together. So please be patient with us. 😂🤭
A little taste of Japan, made with a lot of love and friendship.
See you this weekend.

A small reminder to our event this weekend. We are bringing AfriKo back to Wageningen. We specially chose this weekend of AID to welcome all the new students who are just beginning their journey in Wageningen. What better way to say welcome than around a table filled with food, stories, music and new faces?

Whether you’ve just arrived in town, or Wageningen has already started to feel like home, come as you are.
Let’s eat together, celebrate our differences, and enjoy the simple warmth of being together.

Sunday, 16 August — Afriko Night.

Bring your friends, your curiosity, and your appetite. Come join the table. There’s always room for you.

Last summer, an idea was born from something very simple: friendship.

For more than three years, our two restaurants have stood on the same street, watching the seasons change, welcoming familiar faces, and slowly becoming more than just neighbors. Along the way, our friendship grew stronger—built on mutual respect, shared passion, and countless conversations about food, culture, and community.

One day we asked ourselves, what if we brought our cultures together on one table?

That’s how Afriko Night was born.
Afri from Africa. Ko from Korea.

Two cultures, two cuisines, one shared belief: that food has the power to bring people together.

We honestly didn’t know what to expect. But seeing nearly 200 people filling the street, sharing meals, dancing, laughing, and connecting on a warm summer evening was something we’ll never forget. It reminded us that Wageningen is more than a town—it’s a community where people are curious about one another, where different cultures are embraced, and where everyone can feel they belong.

That feeling is exactly why we’re doing it again.
Next Sunday, 16 August, we’re once again bringing Africa and Korea to one table. Not because our cultures are the same, but because our differences make the experience even richer. Beyond our different roots, languages, and traditions, we all share something universal: a love for good food, meaningful connections, and the joy of gathering around a table.
Afriko Night is a celebration of friendship, diversity, and togetherness. A reminder that no matter where we come from, there’s always room for everyone at the table.

We can’t wait to welcome you, share this evening with you, and create new memories together.
Love you,

People often know us as a Korean fusion kitchen.
But if you ask us, fusion has never just been about mixing ingredients. It’s about the way we experience the world.

Mamabowls began in 2020 with something incredibly simple—we missed Korean food. Back then, finding authentic Korean dishes in Gelderland was nearly impossible. So we did what many people do when they miss home: we started cooking, not to reinvent recipes, not to make them trendy.Just to reconnect with familiar flavours that carried memories.

Fast forward a few years, and things have changed beautifully. Wageningen and Arnhem have become home to so many wonderful Asian businesses. From sushi and rijsttafel to bubble tea, poke bowls, and matcha cafés—we genuinely love seeing our food culture grow.

But even now, there are still those dishes you can’t quite find. The ones you grew up eating. The ones your family made. The flavours that instantly transport you back home. Those are the dishes we keep making. Along the way, we also realised something else. Food has never stood still.

Recipes travel because people travel. Cultures meet, share, adapt, and inspire one another. Every dish carries history, but every generation leaves its own fingerprints on it too. That’s what fusion means to us. Not replacing tradition, but respecting where it comes from while being curious about where it can go.

That spirit is exactly what brought Mamabowls and Muniroh’s Bakery together for The Breakfast Lab. After the warm welcome we received at our very first Breakfast Lab in Wageningen, our hearts were so full that we knew we wanted to do it again. So next weekend, we’re bringing Breakfast Lab to Arnhem. On 4 July, we’ll once again be sharing the Asian breakfast traditions we grew up with—alongside the breads, bakes, and flavours we’ve lovingly created together. A table where Korean inspiration meets Southeast Asian roots, where nostalgia meets curiosity, and where everyone is welcome. We can’t wait to share another slow morning with a new community.

See you in Arnhem on 4th July (Saturday) 🇰🇷

Looking back now, it feels almost funny that none of us had any real experiences in hospitality or running a business. We weren’t chefs building a restaurant empire, and we certainly didn’t have a master plan for where we would be six years later. What we had was a genuine love for food, curiosity about different cultures, and a belief that sharing a meal could create connections that might not happen otherwise.

Over the years, many of you have become part of that story. Some of you have been with us from the beginning. Some discovered us along the way. Many arrived as customers and stayed as friends. Together we have celebrated birthdays, shared lunches between meetings, recovered from difficult days, welcomed new beginnings, and created countless moments that seemed ordinary at the time but became meaningful when we looked back on them later.

The truth is that this anniversary almost slipped past us again. Last year we barely celebrated, and this year wasn’t looking much different. Like many small businesses, we’ve spent the past months balancing new projects, changing regulations, personal milestones, personal struggles, and all the unseen work that goes into keeping something alive and growing. Somewhere between all of that, we realised we were in danger of letting another important moment pass without stopping to reflect on why we started in the first place.

Thank you to our customers for trusting us with your meals, your celebrations, and your time. Thank you to every team member who has contributed their energy and heart to Mamabowls. Thank you to our suppliers, partners, collaborators, and neighbours. And thank you to every small business owner we have met along the way. Your courage, creativity, and resilience have inspired us more than you probably know.
Here’s to six years, to the friendships that brought us here, and to the community that continues to make all of this possible.

Mamabowls turn 6- Let’s celebrate together

Six years ago, Mamabowls began with a simple belief: food has the power to bring people together. Over the years, we’ve shared countless meals, stories, experiments, celebrations, and moments of connection with this community. Whether you’ve joined us once or have been with us from the beginning, your support, trust, and enthusiasm have helped shape Mamabowls into what it is today.

As we celebrate our 6th birthday, we want to give back to the community that has cherished and supported us throughout this journey.

This Sunday, we’re hosting a special donation-based birthday dinner in Wageningen: a communal dining experience where food becomes a way to learn, create, and connect. Inspired by years of gathering around shared tables, the evening is built around the idea that meals are never just about food. They’re about the people around the table, the stories we exchange, and the memories we create together.

In collaboration with Knotwork Collective, we’ve designed a unique dinner-workshop experience called the Co-Cr(EAT)ive Dinner Experience. Together, we’ll explore the fascinating world of cooling foods across Eastern culinary traditions and discover how different cultures have developed their own wisdom for nourishing the body during the warmer months.

As this is our birthday celebration, the dinner is donation-based. Instead of bringing a physical gift, we invite you to contribute whatever amount feels right to you and reflects the value of the experience. Your contribution will support future community gatherings, creative collaborations, and many more shared meals to come.

And if you can’t make it to our communal dinner in Wageningen, we’d still love to celebrate with you. Join us in Arnhem on Sunday, where we’ll be sharing free ice cream as a small token of our appreciation to the community that has supported us over the years.

Here’s to six years of food, friendship, creativity, and connection—and to many more meals shared together.

With gratitude,
Mamabowls Team

Okay, now it is time to introduce about the second event this month as many people asked. This must be one of a kind - special event that we have talked and plan for many months but only be able to execute now. And here is the back story of how it started.

The other day, while scrolling through all old photos, I realised many of them were pictures of meals. Not carefully styled dishes or restaurant food, but messy tables, shared pots, half-finished plates, and people gathered around them.As I looked through them, I realised those photos were never really about the food. They were about being together.

Some captured reunions after months apart. Others were farewell dinners, celebrations, spontaneous gatherings, or simply moments when nobody wanted to eat alone. Different people arrived carrying different stories, yet for a few hours, we shared the same table, the same meal, and a small piece of our lives with one another.

The Co-Cr(EAT)ive Dinner Experience grew from that feeling.
Inspired by years of gathering around communal tables—in student houses, shared kitchens, potlucks, and living rooms—we discovered that food is about much more than recipes. It is about relationships: between ingredients, seasons, cultures, memories, and people. This time, Together with Knotwork Collective (founded by my two beloved friends), we invite you to join an evening of cooking, sharing, and connecting.

Drawing inspiration from Eastern culinary traditions and seasonal food wisdom, we will explore ingredients, exchange stories, and co-create a fully vegan meal together. This is not a dinner where you simply sit back and wait to be served. It is an invitation to participate, create, and discover alongside others.

Together, we will discover what emerges when a table becomes a space for connection, creativity, and belonging.”
