42 investors. 42 start-ups. One elevator.

Yesterday, our new Central Lobby became a matchmaking floor for the first edition of the Pitch Elevator, together with Golden Egg Check and StartupAmsterdam. Founders moved from investor to investor, meeting firms such as Invest-NL, Curiosity VC, Rockstart, No Such Ventures, LUMO Labs and Volve Capital.

“Start-ups in the Netherlands tend to think small. Conversations like these help founders to think bigger,” says Liz Duijves of Invest-NL, who will see Solaq again for a demo.

That is what we want WTC Amsterdam to be about: a place where the people building tomorrow can meet, connect and grow.

Last year, 50 people slept outside on Zuidplein and raised enough for 113 Sheltersuits.

This year, we are going for 100.

On the night of 29 to 30 October, WTC Amsterdam and Sheltersuit Foundation are calling on professionals, teams and companies to sleep outside on Zuidplein. One night. A real difference for the 33,000 people in the Netherlands without a safe place to sleep.

The Central Lobby of WTC Amsterdam is officially open.

People are the building blocks. That was the idea behind the design, and it showed Tuesday night.

Femke Weller, Mirjam Zuurbier of TANK, Declan Stone of The Stone Twins, Rogier Sterk and Jurre van Driel took the stage. Cooloo, VanTot, ByBorre and Stone Projects brought the space to life.

Then the brass band came in. The countdown happened. And the lobby was filled with exactly the people it was designed for.

Lebogang Makomene left Johannesburg at seventeen, worked at the 2010 World Cup, built a career across three continents, and ended up in a building she had noticed on her very first day in Amsterdam.

She now works as a freelance financial consultant at CBRE Investment Management in WTC Amsterdam, moving between reporting, compliance, forecasting, and strategic planning. She adapts fast, builds trust across clients and contexts, and has learned to stay open rather than boxed in.

“You will make AI mistakes. The race is who makes them first.”

Ruben Timmerman did not hold back. Yesterday, WTC Live brought together people from tech, finance and impact to dig into what AI really means for the way we hire, lead and build.

Merve Karaman pushed back on going it alone: “Don’t create ego systems, but ecosystems.” Merle Bartsch named the trap most organisations are falling into: we are confusing output for outcome, and without value AI will only make us faster at the wrong work. Rob Steur made the talent case clear: recruit for attitude, train for skills.
