In 1964, a platform built in Cork was towed into the North Sea and set down nine kilometres off Noordwijk, just outside Dutch waters. From 15 August, TV Noordzee and Radio Noordzee broadcast commercial programming the law didn't allow on land.

It lasted four months. The government wrote a new law to reach it, and on 17 December the police and navy came aboard.

The platform went on to serve as a measuring station for Rijkswaterstaat, was taken down in 2006, and rebuilt in Delfzijl. Since 2011, it has stood above the IJ.

Sixty years after the first transmission, REM is back on the air. Come up and see for yourself.
