While our beach town of Aserradores along with the majority of the north-west corner of Nicaragua is part of Chinandega, roughly 35 minutes away lays the city center of Chinandega. A hustling and busy area known for its deep history, daily trading and shopping, beautiful churches, colonial buildings, culture and sports.
Chinandega's cultural and historical riches date from before the Spanish conquest, when this region was inhabited by various Mesoamerican peoples, who had perhaps originated from the north, possibly from present-day Mexico. There is a museum in the city, "Enrique Mantica Deshon", which contains 1,200 archaeological artifacts of pre-Columbian origin.
In early times, The Spanish chronicler Friar Antonio Vázquez Espinoza described his 1613 visit to Chinandega: "The town is comprised of many Indians, plentiful corn, and all of the fruits of the earth, and appears to be a piece of paradise."
Chinandega is a center of agriculture growing sugarcane, bananas, peanuts, sesame seeds, cashews, oranges, and grains. It is a sh*****ng and fishing center and it manufactures salt and leather goods. The city is also home to the largest sugar mills and rum factory (Flor de Caña) in the country.
While traveling through Chinandega, youre likely to see a number of beautiful churches. Many of the churches have withstood over a century of violent storms, earthquakes, and wars. During the earthquake of 1885, many of the churches were destroyed and later restored or rebuilt to the state in which they still stand today.
Futball and baseball are both a big part of life for many of the people of Chinadega.
Representing Chinandega, The Tigres de Chinandega competes in the Nicaragua Professional Baseball Leage (LPBN). The team has won the league championship four times, in 2006, 2012, 2017, and 2018. Tigres play their home games at Estadio Efraín Tijerino, which seats 9,000 people.
We love and appreciate our busy town of Chinandega. Thanks for reading!
