LETTER TO MY FUTURE SON
My Dearest Don
I am writing this to you now, years before I will likely ever meet you. I want to give you a piece of my heart, a truth I've learned, and a promise I intend to keep.
The truth is this: life is hard. It can be incredibly beautiful, full of light, love, and laughter, but it is also a relentless grind. You will face disappointments that feel like the end of the world, failures that sting, and challenges that test your very resolve.
And I won't lie to you—it is difficult to be a man. Not because of some outdated idea of what a man should be, but because the world often demands so much from us. It will ask you to be strong when you feel weak, to be the rock when you're crumbling inside, and to carry burdens—not just your own, but often those of the people you love.
You will learn that courage isn't the absence of fear, but pressing forward despite it.
You will discover that integrity is what you do when no one is watching.
You will realize that vulnerability is not a weakness; it is the truest expression of strength.
You will feel the pressure to succeed, to provide, and to 'figure it all out.' There will be times when you feel the weight of expectation on your shoulders, and it will be immense. I want you to know that it’s okay to struggle. It’s okay to stumble. The measure of a man is not how often he falls, but how determined he is to stand back up.
But here is my promise to you, my son:
Every long night, every early morning, every sacrifice your mother and I are making right now is for one ultimate purpose: so that you and your sisters will not have to endure the same struggles I passed through.
I am working tirelessly to build a foundation—a launching pad, not a stopping point. I am clearing the path of the biggest obstacles I faced, whether they were financial, educational, or emotional. I am fighting for your future freedom today.
My dream for you is not an easy life, but one where you are free to choose your own hard. Free to pursue a meaningful career you love, free to choose your battles, and free to spend your energy building your dreams rather than simply surviving.
When you are older and facing a tough decision, remember this letter. Remember that you come from struggle, but you are not defined by it. You are the embodiment of resilience.
I love you more than words can say.
Your Father,
Who is always in your corner.
