One lesson I was consistent in intentionally imbuing in my son this holiday and afterwards is how to embrace and accept failure and losses with grace and equanimity as he cannot always win.

I used mostly his love for PlayStation soccer to help emphasize this.

When adults play with him, I tell them not to be soft on him to allow him win as this will enable him improve at his game play.

When I score and win him, I jubilate as well.

Before now, if he loses or concedes a point in any game or endeavour, his instinctive response is to quit or want to sulk, but not anymore. I have altered that and I did it intentionally. He now laughs at himself when he makes mistakes or losses a game.

You won’t always win. You won’t always have your way. How you handle this is what makes you enjoy life and set you up for even better outcomes later.

The ability to handle set backs, momentary failures, losses and push backs without being dispirited is what produce great people and lead to great outcomes.
