Asun (pronounced ah-SOON) is a fiery, smoky, and irresistibly flavorful delicacy originating from the Yoruba people of Ondo State in Western Nigeria . Often described as "spicy barbecued goat meat," it has evolved from a traditional party staple into one of the most beloved street foods and appetizers across the country .

Asun is traditionally made from grilled or roasted goat meat that is then chopped into bite-sized pieces and stir-fried in a blazing hot mixture of vegetable oil, Scotch bonnet peppers (ata rodo), onions, and essential spices . The result is a dish that is simultaneously smoky, savory, and intensely spicy.

Asun is defined by its heat. The level of spiciness is adjustable, but the authentic version packs a significant punch thanks to generous amounts of Scotch bonnet peppers. The Yoruba people are known for their love of fiery foods, and Asun is a proud representation of that culinary heritage .

Goat meat is the star of this dish. For the best texture, use meat with the skin still attached, as the skin becomes chewy and gelatinous when cooked, adding a unique mouthfeel . Goat meat is leaner than beef but can be tough, so patience during the cooking process is required.

How Crab Take Teach Me Humble”

One time, we dey chop for riverside. My uncle see crab waka slow-slow for sand. E tell me: “See crab? No be muscle alone dey win battle.”

I laugh. “But crab get two strong claw! E fit fight.”

My uncle smile. “Wait make you see.”

He use stick touch crab. Immediately, crab raise im two hands ready to attack. But when e stand like that, e no fit see front again. E just dey shake claw for air. My uncle push am small, crab fall back.

Den my uncle talk: “Crab wey too proud of im hand, e forget say im eye need to see road. You wey want chop life, no be say you no get power. But no carry your power show everywhere some fight wey you think you win, na for ground you go land.”

From that day, when I see crab, I remember: Better to hold your peace than to hold your two hands up and miss where you dey go.
