The holy month of Ramadan for many Muslims around the world is a time of reflection and sacrifice dedicated to a daily abstinence from food and drink (including water) until sunset, for thirty days.

Throughout this period, it is important to consume foods from all major food groups so that energy level can be sustained, increase the feeling of fullness and prevent constipation.

You might want to avoid consuming too much of oily, salty and floury foods which can decrease the body’s resistance without providing adequate vitamin and minerals which are vital to sustaining energy levels longer.

Some of the foods you should be paying attention to are:

Fruits and Vegetables, because they are rich in fibres and also contain vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, which are vital to good health.

Rice and alternatives: Include complex carbohydrates that are rich in providing the body with sustainable energy.

Meats and alternatives: protein rich sources such as lean meat, legumes, fish and low-fat dairy products should not be left out your Ramadan meal times.

Are you looking to have a healthy Nigerian recipe that will increase your energy level during the long hours of Ramadan? We would be glad to help you with that.

Do you think of some food as “good” and some as “bad”?

Can you imagine just thinking of food as food: delicious, enjoyable, and sustaining?

Can you imagine a life without avoiding “bad” foods – without dieting?

Dieting can bring out the worst in us.

Research suggests that low-calorie and restrictive diets can make us anxious, irritable, frustrated, and depressed (Markey, 2015).

In fact, just the act of trying to avoid certain foods makes us want them more (Polivy & Herman, 2002).

The key to successfully improving one’s health is to find a way to make healthier choices without starving or eliminating the foods you love...

With every bite of food or sip of beverage that we put in our mouths, we should be considering whether or not it serves us in some way.

The most obvious consideration is taste… because if it doesn’t taste good, who wants to eat it? Certainly not me! I consider the enjoyment of food (which primarily comes from its taste and smell) to be one of the primary ways that food serves me.

In fact, the only times I eat something that doesn’t taste good to me is when I’m learning to like a new food or I’ve cooked dinner and it didn’t turn out as good as I would have liked. (I try not to talk about the latter very much!)

After the taste, we have to consider whether or not the food is serving our bodies nutritionally. This is what separates people who love to eat from people who love food.

Loving food means that what happens after you swallow is as important to you as the pleasure received when smelling, tasting and chewing food.

You show this kind of food love when you…

1 - Read the ingredients list on food labels so you know what’s going in your body.

2 - Take the time to plan, shop for and cook a wholesome dinner.

3 - Try a nutrition-packed food for the first time,Choose to forgo really good cheese because you are sensitive to dairy.

4 - Tell your kids that fruit is dessert.

5 - Plan your meals so you get each of the colors of the rainbow.

6 - Think about how you can improve your diet for optimum health.

Fortunately, you don’t have to choose between taste and nutrition… you just have to consider both and then choose wisely.
