Once upon a time .... in Swakopmund
NB this is not the steel Jetty that we know nowadays.
This was a predecessor built of wooden poles, about 20m north of the present Jetty.
Construction of the steel Jetty began only in 1911. It was supposed to reach a length of over 600m, with a T-shaped platform for ships ships to dock directly against it. When the first 220m were completed, construction came to an abrupt end at the outbreak of the first World War in September 1914. By 1915 all harbor activities had been shifted to Walvis Bay.
Swakopmund remains a harbor town that has not seen a single ship in over a hundred years.
And instead of turning into a ghost town, Swakopmund is, against all odds, thriving and growing in leaps and bounds, like no other town or city on the coast of the continent.
We can all simply say "I LOVE SWAKOPMUND".
