So that's a wrap, we're off on Gawai holiday for a few days! The lateness of the post is a clue to how good the night was, The Bikalan doing what The Bikalan does best!
Rewind back to 4.30 yesterday afternoon & some tension in the Newland house. The weather forecast was near perfect, only a 4% chance of rain, but as we left it started spitting! Just a little but a half blue/half grey sky filled us with dread. Pretty much every table we had was booked so if it rains, we're 'up sh"t creek without a paddle'. But as so often is the case, we needn't have worried, the early raindrops were just messing with our heads, the evening turned out hot & dry, the perfect conditions for a busy & fun night!
An extensive roll call tonight, apologies in advance for any missed. Let's begin with Esther, long time since weve seen her, then Abel & Alvin again, it's been a while. Out front we have my music buddy Joe Kaos with Mrs Effy & family, always fun. Next to them the SapΓ© Mums; tonight's special guests were Alex & Eason, the junior SapΓ© superstars, all the families came to support. Alan & Viv & friends at table 6, Graeme, Gos, & Straun at the bar, & a full house at the back, too many to mention.
Inside our big Kuching international brigade, Deb & Mike, Michelle & John, Marcelle, Eileen, & many more, always good to see them. The other big gang was our dear friend Benny James, along with German Chris & Mrs Ann & so many more. Add to this bunch, a surprise visit from our Italian Stallion, a very stressed Mauro, Bikalan & beer chilled him out nicely.
Our music tonight was a double header, the main act was B'Groove supported by Alex & Eason between sets. B'Groove were awesome as always, filled the night with Country & Dayak songs to welcome the Gawai celebrations. Lots of guest singers & plenty of Poco Poco. When they took their breaks, Alex & Eason wowed us! These lads just keep getting better! Only 12 years old & already fantastic showmen. Dressed to impress with amazing tribal headdress & vest, combined with such talent. I'm really in awe of these young fellas, & the crowd felt the same. When the boys were playing, the whole of Siniawan was at The Bikalan, so amazing. Last but not least, Dylan, the prince of Siniawan, escaped from the golf club to come see us.
So that's a quick summary of an amazing night, apologies to any I missed & a huge thanks to all who came for sharing your evening with us, I hope you had as much fun as we did.
The biggest thanks as ever to our team, one chef down through holidays, our gang powered through with their usual resilience & style. Service with a smile, even under pressure. We're nothing without these guys.
Happy Gawai to everybody, let's enjoy this special holiday & we'll see you all soon.

Sramat Onu Gawea!
Gawai is almost upon us! Here in Malaysia, we’re a wonderfully multicultural bunch and we’ll happily celebrate anything β€” Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Christmas, and of course, Gawai. Any excuse to bring out the cakes and cookies!
For the Dayak people, however, Christmas and Gawai are the truly special occasions. While Christmas is shared with the rest of the world, Gawai is uniquely ours.
Celebrated annually on the 1st and 2nd of June, Gawai marks the end of the rice harvesting season and gives thanks for the blessings, harmony, sustenance, and good fortune received throughout the year. Over time, it has grown into Sarawak’s biggest festival β€” a time for families and friends to host, visit, and share the famous warmth and hospitality of the Dayak people.
Gawai is a celebration for all Sarawakians β€” those born and raised here, those living overseas, and those who have chosen Sarawak as their home. Hospitality knows no boundaries. Malay, Chinese, Indian, Dayak, expat β€” during Gawai, we celebrate together as one people, united as Sarawakians.
At The Bikalan, we’ll be taking a short break to allow our staff, families, and ourselves time to celebrate with loved ones. We will be closed from Sunday 31st May and reopen on Thursday 4th June.
But before that, we’re going out with a bang! On Saturday night, we’ll be hosting a special pre-Gawai party featuring live music from the excellent B’Groove, alongside the beautiful traditional SapΓ© sounds of Alex & Eason. It promises to be a fantastic evening and the perfect way to begin the celebrations β€” so don’t miss it!
From all of us at The Bikalan, we wish our family, friends, and wonderful guests a very happy Gawai. Stay safe, stay happy, and as always β€” eat, drink, and be merry!
Kitai semua urang Sarawak! β€” We are all Sarawakian!

Back in town & back in the business. No rest for the wicked.
We reached home before midnight Thursday after a long day of travelling, rest & laundry Friday, back to the shop Friday evening. A bit rainy & quiet last night, a soft restart for us. Tonight was very different! Hot & humid & a street full of thirsty people. Back to what we do best.
The crowd built up early, good weather always does that. First group were our dear friends Lydia, Brent & Alex. Come back next week, Alex will be displaying his SapΓ© skills! We were joined by our local legend Kevin, MC master & Rainforest Festival veteran, so good to see him.
A wild gang at 4 & 5, the Army wives arrived from Brunel. I kid you not. Lynda & Francesca have been here twice before & brought a big gang on a girls trip tonight. When the Army arrives, you best be ready. Absolutely wonderful bunch, chaperoned by our good buddy Jason. Not that this group needs chaperoning.
Outside at table 2 a very enjoyable couple, Laura from London & Sinbad from Paris, currently residing in Amsterdam! Very enjoyable chat.
Caught on the way out, Martin from Rickmansworth, close to my home town, with his Sarawakian wife. Still living in UK but planning their escape.
At the back it's our own family! 3 of the Chongs. Missing the busy twinies but lovely to see them.
Last but not least, a return from our good friend Henrik from Aarhus Denmark, he calls by whenever he's in Sarawak. Here with his Sarawakian wife, daughter, & her partner Patrick, who already has his first Dayak tattoo! Henrik & Mrs also looking at when they're here for good.
So yeah, busy & fun night. Our life is a rollercoaster, one thing to another. I'm sure we're busier now than when we were working full-time!
Another fun Bikalan night, made so good by our awesome team. They were kept very busy tonight. Our thanks to all the gang.

GAWAI COMES TO THE BIKALAN β€” AND WE’RE CELEBRATING IN STYLE!
It’s Gawai season β€” the time when the Dayak community comes together to celebrate harvest, friendship, music, and the unique spirit of Sarawak. And at The Bikalan, we plan to do it the best way we know… properly with style!
Join us on Saturday 30th May for a huge night of live music, laughter, and Gawai cheer as the fantastic B Groove return to The Bikalan stage. Lee and the boys will be bringing an energetic mix of Country, Rock ’n’ Roll, and even classic Dangdut favourites β€” guaranteed to keep everyone singing & dancing along, all night long.
And this time, we’re adding something truly special.
Between sets, special guests Alex & Easan will perform beautiful traditional SapΓ© music, bringing the authentic sound of Sarawak to the heart of the celebration. It’s the perfect blend of modern party atmosphere and the rich cultural traditions that make Gawai so special.
So boys & girls, save the date and come get your Gawai B Groove on at The Bikalan!
🎢 Music starts from around 6pm
🍻 Come early, grab a cold drink, some delicious food, and settle in β€” it’s shaping up to be one unforgettable night in Siniawan.

Tomorrow is Mothering Sunday, a time to celebrate the wonderful ladies who helped shape us into who we are today.
At The Bikalan, we’d love to help make the occasion even more special. Join us for dinner tomorrow and all mums will receive a complimentary cocktail or glass of Tuak β€” our small gesture of appreciation for these amazing women.
We hope to see you all on Sunday!

As Gawai approaches, never forget the magic that makes Sarawak so special β€” the spirit that brings people together, smooths the rhythm of life, and makes Gawai truly OUR celebration.
Tuak is the traditional rice wine of Borneo, crafted from rice, yeast, sugar, and fresh mountain water before being left to ferment naturally. The result is an earthy, slightly sweet brew that captures the taste and soul of kampung life.
Langkau is its stronger elder brother β€” a distilled spirit traditionally made from rice or barley using spring water from Mount Serembu. Rich, smooth, and deeply rooted in tradition, it carries the taste of the ancestors. Its name comes from the small hut in the rice paddies where it was once distilled, and even today its production remains wrapped in mystery, folklore, and heritage.
Throughout Gawai, both of these legendary drinks will flow freely β€” and if you would like to experience them for yourself, visit us at The Bikalan.
We offer authentic rice Tuak, along with flavoured varieties infused with Ginger or Roselle.
Original Rice Tuak β€” RM30
Ginger or Roselle Tuak β€” RM35
(640ml bottles)
Our Langkau is exceptionally smooth with a flavour you will never forget β€” quite simply the finest Langkau this Towkay has ever tasted.
Langkau β€” RM55
(750ml bottle)
These special brews are UNIQUE to The Bikalan. If you want to experience the true spirit of Gawai and taste β€œThe Strength of Sarawak”, come and join us.
Bulk orders are available upon request.

& we're back! Another epic music night at The Bikalan.
It's my privilege that amidst the chaos & mayhem, I can step back for a moment & look at these nights. Like a spectator, I just stand back & take it all in. Wow, who could imagine that in a funny little town in the middle of nowhere, there could be a bar so alive with fun, singing, dancing, & sheer happiness.
Let's rewind a little to an anxious afternoon looking at the skies, the forecast was good but ominous clouds. The Mem Sahib is back from her Bali sojourn & we're good to go.
This one was by special request, our dear friends Suri & Cam had a VIP in town, Cam's Mum Celia making her now annual visit! Can we put a band on? Sure, why not! So let's welcome our guests of honour, Celia & friend Sue, all the way from 'Straya!
We have a growing Expat community in Kuching & a few times a year, they descend upon us, it was one of those nights. An exhaustive exhausting guest list. First on deck was Boston, Michelle & John. Relatively new arrivals after years of visiting, they've hit their Kuching straps & are loving every minute of it! Next Portland & Boston, Deb & Mike. Then Dave & Ros from Australia & next up, Houston's finest, Billybob! 70 plus years old & so full of life! This guy always puts a smile on my face. He blew into Kuching a bit over a year ago & made his mark immediately. Famous in the best bars of our town, any night with Billybob will be a good one.
Now we have the clan MacLean, Mum & Sue, Suri & Cam, never a dull moment with these guys. Joined by Dom & Carrie & our favourite Russian Scouse couple, Natasha & Steve. & A birthday to celebrate with Bill!
The Guestlist was endless, a full turnout of internationals. Apologies to those missed from the name check.
The weather was perfect & whilst the street was a little quite, The Bikalan was buzzing. Some wonderful entertainment from On-Strings Trio, who were 4 tonight, supported by a lively crowd of guest singers. They finished a gig in the afternoon then straight to us, rock n roll!
As the night wound down, it's time for a small celebration, happy birthday Jenice, probably our most fearless Kitten, always happy to talk to the guests.
So that's a wrap for an amazing evening. Nobody can do it like The Bikalan. I guess we've done so many of these now that we take it a bit for granted, but take a step back & another look, this is awesome stuff! A packed bar full of people singing, dancing, laughing, & having proper good time. It's something quite special.
Salute to our team, worked hard & kept everyone well looked after. We're only as good as you guys, & that makes us outstanding! There aren't many better nights out than this.
Cheers & see you in , πŸ˜ŽπŸ€˜πŸ€ πŸ»πŸŠπŸŽΆπŸ”πŸŽΈπŸ·πŸ‘πŸŒΆπŸŽŠβœˆπŸ˜πŸ€„πŸ²

Night 2 of my enforced singularity. My wife has left me! Fear not, not for a long time, just for a good time. Grace, Lydia, & Lizzie have hit Bali, every 2 years they do this, leaving me to my own devices!
Luckily I'm surrounded by the most awesome people, they can run The Bikalan without either of us. I'm just some extra hands who takes my orders from our team! The best!
So how's the crowd? Excellent! We're in a lull between festivals at the moment but great weather brought the people out. Lots of bookings tonight, 10 pax at the back, Jonathan & friends, an exciting mix of locals & Expats, Dutch & British. Lots of fun chat about the benefits of life here.
Upstairs we have 10 more, Melvin & wife, celebrating her birthday, such a lovely group.
Next table our good friend Kiranjit & friends, all enjoying themselves. Another 10.
I spent the night working the room, making sure all were having a fun evening. Quite easy when you have good food & good people around you.
I spent the in-between time with with Antoinette & Kai from Namibia & Manchester respectively, good old fashioned travellers! They found us from Lonely Planet Guide (the bible back in the days before the Internet), really fun people to hang with when not chatting with the other customers.
We did good! All the guests left happy, well fed & watered.
An exciting but tough night, without Towkay Nio, something is missing. But hey, The Bikalan is a machine that runs smoothly with or without us, I just get to see how it works without the Boss. So proud of this gang ❀️
Spoiler alert, one of these pictures wasn't taken at The Bikalan πŸ€”
