On this day in 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 or MH17, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down while flying over eastern Ukraine, killing all 283 passengers and 15 crews on board.

In October 2015, a 15-month investigation by the Dutch Safety Board (DSB) found that the plane crashed after being hit by a Russian-made Buk missile over eastern Ukraine. In May 2018, prosecutors noted that they had identified the missile used to shoot down the plane as coming from Russia's armed forces. Head of the crime squad of the Netherlands' national police, Wilbert Paulissen, said the missile was fired from Russia's 53rd Anti-Aircraft Brigade.
