The Port of Malacca was one of the major zones of international trade and commercial activity in history. This produced a melting pot of culture, cuisine and languages, creating unique South Asian flavours that can be found nowhere else.
During the Japanese invasion of China and Southeast Asia, many Chinese were forced to leave their homeland in China and seek new horizons in foreign lands, even settling in these places.
Being in an unfamiliar environment, they depended on each other and lived communally.
In 1943, a group of people from the “Jia Ji Shi Bi Town” (嘉积石璧镇) in the Hainan province rented a shop near the Malacca Port and established Ji Chang. This marked the beginning of the Indonesian-Hainanese grilled meat skewers known as Hainanese Satay.
