8 kittens born in our new cat house, and 7 more abandoned kittens we had to say no to…

That’s the reality of rescue in Kuching right now.

Over the past few days alone we’ve rescued 11 cats, with another rescue already agreed for tomorrow. At the same time, we’ve been absolutely flooded with messages from people desperately asking for help.

One person today told us: ā€œthere’s nowhere else I can send them.ā€

And honestly, we know. We’re painfully aware of it. And we’re sorry that sometimes we simply can’t do more.

The difficult part is this: for the first time ever, we finally have the space.

With our new cat house now open, two separate rescue premises, and our large outdoor enclosure due to open within the next couple of weeks, we finally have room to grow this project properly. We also now have amazing volunteers helping us every single day, meaning we finally have the manpower too.

But right now, what we don’t have is the funding.

We’ve just finished paying for materials for the outside enclosure. Current vet bills are sitting around RM5,000. One cat is booked for major surgery tomorrow, another on Thursday. Rent is now due on two properties.

And those 7 abandoned kittens we desperately wanted to help today? Every single one would need infectious disease testing before entering the shelter. Seven Parvo tests. Seven FIP tests. That alone becomes a huge cost immediately.

The truth is there really isn’t much help for street cats here in Kuching. That’s exactly why this project matters so much to us. But making it work takes an enormous amount of money.

We don’t want to ask for donations forever. We’re actively working towards long-term sustainability through future fundraisers, events, and independent business ideas that can help fund rescue properly. We also know TVNR is the only real long-term solution, and we’re working on that too. But large-scale change requires funding and cooperation much bigger than what our tiny team can provide alone.

Right now, we still have to focus on the short term too: how do we help as many cats as possible today?

Because right now we have a backlog of cats needing help. We have the space. We have the people. We’re ready to keep growing this project.

But we need help with the funding.

If anyone wishes to support what we’re doing, our QR code is attached to this post. Any amount genuinely helps. Our first immediate priority is trying to help those 7 abandoned kittens, but the need goes far beyond that.

If you’re outside Malaysia, or would prefer another payment method, please visit the link in our bio.

And finally, thank you.

To everyone who has donated, volunteered, shared our posts, adopted cats, sponsored cats, or simply believed in what we’re building here; thank you.

Together we really are making a difference for the cats of Kuching. And together, we can take this project even further. 🐾

A big day today - 10 new rescues 🩷

We were contacted in the past few days about several cats that needed our help, and today we brought ten of them under our care.

Three kittens without a mumma, one lovely grey kitten who was found all alone, a mumma and her four kittens who were kindly rescued by someone a few weeks ago, and also one single female cat who was very scared and nervous.

After visiting the vet today, all ten of them are safely back at our new cat house and settling in well.

As we re-start our rescue work, we are still caring for around 100 other cats over two premises, including several going through FIP treatment, and also still continuing our work building our large outdoor enclosure so that our cats can have even more fun!

We also now have 8 newborn kittens just born in the past few days, which we will update you all about tomorrow.

If you wish to help support the work we are doing, whether it’s our rescue efforts, caring for all of our cats, or completing our renovation works, every single donation truly means the world to us. Our QR is attached, and we really appreciate all the support we can get.

As always, a HUGE thankyou to everyone who has continued to support us along this journey. We couldn’t do it without you. 🩷

New rescue ā—ļø

Yesterday we received a report about a mumma cat and her four kittens who had been left outside a shop. Thankfully the person who reported them to us was able to help by collecting them and bringing them to the vet.

The mumma cat we have named Mango, and she has four amazingly adorable kittens. All FIP and Parvovirus tests have been carried out, and thankfully everything came back negative.

Mango and her babies are now safely back at our shelter, and everyone is doing very well. Mango is very calm and comfortable; and both her and her kittens are getting everything they need.

We’re so glad to see this gorgeous family off of the street, it means the world to us to see them already enjoying a more comfortable life in complete safety. Mango will never have to worry about anything ever again, and every one of her kittens will find perfect permanent homes when the time comes 🧔🩷

From the streets of Kuching to life on a luxury cruise ship: this is the story of Earl 🩷

Back in December, we rescued a lovely cat from a school where he was about to be removed and dumped elsewhere. A situation that could very easily have ended badly for him.

Thankfully, we quickly found him a temporary foster home with an amazing American couple living here in Kuching, Deb & Mike. They named him Earl, and for almost six months they absolutely spoiled him with love, attention, and a safe home while he waited for adoption.

Then in January we received one of the most unusual adoption enquiries we’ve ever had.

Richard and John, also American, contacted us from their full-time around-the-world cruise ship, which allows residents to keep cats onboard. Their elderly cat had sadly passed away, and they had decided that Cat City would be the perfect place to find a new companion.

And we knew Earl was perfect for them straight away.

He was already used to condo living, was extremely friendly and calm, and seemed like exactly the kind of cat who would adapt well to life onboard.

Over the following months we worked to organise everything needed for him to leave Sarawak and join the ship: health checks, vaccines, microchip, paperwork… even creating parts of the required health documentation ourselves because some of it simply didn’t seem to exist.

Then last week, the big day finally arrived. Richard and John’s ship docked in Kuching and they came to our new cat house to collect Earl. They’d even made him his own coat of arms!

We were sad to see him go, and his fosterers even more so, but all of us were incredibly happy knowing the amazing life waiting for him.

Now, one week later, we’ve received our first update.

Earl has settled in brilliantly. He spends his time lounging by the window watching the ocean go by, and even goes for walks on a leash around the deck. At the moment he’s docked in the Philippines, apparently having a great time watching all the boats.

Most of our adoptions happen quietly behind the scenes, but this one felt too special not to share.

Not many Kuching street cats end up living on a luxury cruise ship and travelling the world.

A huge thank you to Mike and Deb for loving and caring for Earl for so many months, and of course to Richard and John for giving him such a unique forever home.

Our new rescues and renovation update ā—ļø

In the past few days we have taken in three new cats from the streets; two pregnant females and one male with an injured leg.

All have been tested for parvovirus and FIP, and thankfully all have tested negative. The male cat is already at our new happy cat house, while the two pregnant females are currently at our intake centre while they wait to give birth.

We’ve got lots more happening to!

Currently we are working on the construction of our outdoor enclosure at the new cat house; our lovely volunteers have been very hard at work out in the sun helping us with this.

And, of course, we are still looking after the various young kittens and sick cats at our intake centre. At present we have 8 very young kittens, two pregnant mummas, and several cats undergoing treatment for FIP.

We’re definitely very busy!

If you wish to help us out with any of our current work, we would be extremely grateful. Whether to help with our construction project, our ongoing vet bills for poorly cats, or the spaying/neutering and vaccinations of new arrivals and fast growing kittens, every donation really does help. Our QR is attached.

A big thank you as always to everybody who continues to support us; we couldn’t do this without you 🧔

Looking after an entire house of cats is no small effort, which is why we are so grateful to have such kind and dedicated volunteers helping us.

First of all, we are delighted to welcome back Sam, our Italian cat hero! Sam originally joined us a few months ago, and after continuing his planned travels around SEA, returned to help us full time a few weeks ago. Sam is a truly dedicated and compassionate animal advocate who has already done so much to help us and the cats. 🧔

We also currently have three other international volunteers helping us for the next little while!

We have Tess, from Melbourne Australia; an animal lover who comes from a background of working in the Australian RSPCA and has great knowledge of how animal shelters operate. And also Kate and Jack all the way from Scotland; who are travelling around the world and kindly donating their time to worthy causes as they do so.

We’re honoured to be joined by such a wonderful group of kind hearted people, and the cats have clearly had a great time being cared for by them. It’s thanks to these amazing people that we are able to continue our renovations, and start the important work of planning our upcoming fundraisers.

So thank you, to Sam, Tess, Kate, and Jack - from us and the cats! 🧔

When we take in a cat from the street, we have no idea how long they will be with us for. It could be weeks, months, or even years.

That’s why it’s not enough to simply store these cats, we need to give them a life that means while they wait for their forever homes, they still get to live the best possible life. They need a real home no matter how long they are with us.

And so, now, we have our new cat house. A big space specifically designed to give our rescue cats everything they need and deserve. Fresh air, space to play, a clean environment, sunshine and more. And soon we will be opening our new outdoor enclosure to make their lives even better.

When we rescue them from the streets, we need to ensure that they get a space that is not only better than where they came from, but also at least equal to the home they will one day find. This new space gives them that.

We’ve moved 25 cats into our new space so far, and many more are on the way.

For now, enjoy these beautiful pictures taken by our volunteer Sam.

At the end of March we decided to take a big risk, with the goal of creating a space that our rescue cats really deserved.

On April 1st we started work on a new property. We knew it would not only be physically hard work, but also financially challenging. Now with rent to pay on two locations, and without the ability to maintain ongoing social media posts or regular fundraising campaigns, it was a race against time to get the project complete.

During that time we also had to make very difficult decisions, our rescue efforts all but dried up, we lost a lot of sponsors and regular donors, but we also gained new ones who were keen to help us achieve our goal.

Now, after around 6.5 weeks of non-stop work, we have completed stage one and moved the first 25 cats into their new home. This is a huge relief, and has already allowed us to carefully re-start our rescue work, with two new cats brought under our care today.

Reaching this stage means the world to us, and we are eternally grateful to everyone who has helped us achieve this. The purpose of this new space isn’t simply to act as somewhere to store cats, it’s designed to give them a life they can truly enjoy; ensuring that while they wait for their forever homes, they still get to live their best possible lives. It’s safe to say after the first two days, all of the cats seem delighted to be here!

And now, we continue immediately onto stage two. Building our large outdoor enclosure. Our perimeter fence is already in place, and we’ve already started groundwork on the enclosure. Later this week we will be concreting, and then construction begins. This will take our new place to another level; allowing our cats the freedom to truly enjoy the outdoors, the sunshine, the fresh air, and the feeling of grass beneath their feet. We’re so looking forward to allowing the cats into this new outdoor space for the first time!

If you wish to help us finish stage two as quickly as possible, please follow the link in the comments or in our bio. Additionally our QR code will also be in the comments below.

And thank you, once again, to everyone who has helped so far. From us, and the cats. 🩷🐾

Enjoying the morning sun in their new home!

Yesterday we brought the first 25 rescue cats to our new cat house, where they can enjoy more space, freedom, sunshine, and fresh air than ever before 🩷

Later this week we continue work on stage two, building their large outdoor enclosure where they will be able to truly enjoy a natural cat-like existence, but safe from disease, cruelty, or injury. We can’t wait for them, and you, to see it completed! 😸
