👻 Do you actually know what Hungry Ghost Month is about?
Hungry Ghost Month falls during the 7th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Traditionally, it is a time when many families remember their ancestors, make offerings, burn incense and joss paper, and show respect to wandering spirits.
You may notice food offerings, roadside altars, incense, getai performances and other rituals during this period. Even if you don’t practise these traditions yourself, one simple rule goes a long way: be respectful and don’t disturb the offerings or rituals.
And perhaps the most important thing to understand — Hungry Ghost Month isn’t only about “ghosts.” Behind many of these practices are ideas of remembrance, family, respect, compassion and tradition.
