KAYRA Authentic Kerala Cuisine Michelin Selected 2023, 2024 • Tatler 2023, 2024• Celebrating flavors of Kerala with recipes through generations
(929)

Kayra pays homage to this heritage, and serves recipes handed down through the generations. Kerala lies on the Indian Malabar Coast, a tropical region made up of inland waterways, coconut groves, and spice plantations. Its spice trade and cultural exchanges between Hindus, Muslims and Christians, played a pivotal role in the creation of Kerala cuisine - the very same you’ll find in our restaurant. Kayra derives its name from keram, which means coconut palm trees in Malayalam, the language indigenous to Kerala and the birth of its name. The inspiration behind Kayra started over 65 years ago with the opening of the first Kerala Restaurant in Johor Bahru in 1949. It was a meeting place for Keralites to connect with their roots, and savour authentic Kerala cuisine. Kayra pays homage to this heritage, and serves recipes handed down through the generations, renowned for its distinct use of coconut - whether grated, roasted, or as a cooking medium. The palate-pampering dishes, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, are freshly prepared
and served everyday. Each dish is lovingly crafted and celebrates the true flavours of Kerala. We hope you love it as much as we enjoy sharing it with you.

This week, Amma’s Table belongs to our head chef — it’s Sabeel’s Leaf.
On a trip to Kerala, Sabeel had me over to his Amma’s table, and his dad asked what fish I liked — because the dock was 10 minutes away and the catch on our plates was caught that same morning. Fresh fish masala, fish moilee, homestyle chicken pepper fry, every chammanthi imaginable, prawn pera, appams — down to earth, flavourful, abundant, and full of warmth, love, and taste.
That’s what we’re bringing to Amma’s Table this weekend. Come hungry.

Something new is coming to our table.
A leaf, a story, a reason to come hungry.
Wait for it — the inspiration behind it all.
And what’s in store, this Saturday and Sunday.
Amama’s Table is almost here.

01/07/2026

Amama is what my children call my mother.

And every Sunday now, we bring her table to Kayra. On one leaf. No menu. No choices. Just what we remember growing up.

Amama's tablenis exactky that, every weekend, one leaf, built from the memories of people who cook in Kayra in their Amama's kitchen.

When I sat down with Sabeel, the whole team agreed on one thing appam was everyone’s constant growing up or in Sabeel's case,Pathiri. So that stays, every week.

This week — it’s my leaf. Based on my memories growing up.

Chicken cutlet
Thoran. Aviyal. Inji puli.
Appam with chicken mappas.
Palakkad red rice which was a must for my dad, with his fish mango curry.

Our fish pickle. Fish padai — tangy, made with gingerly oil.

Ikan bilis masala, just the way I grew up eating it.
And prawn ghee roast of course.

Next week it’s Chef Sabeel's leaf and based on his memories.

Every week, something different. But we promise you — the table will always be filled with flavour, and goodness.

So come hungry. Come for Amama’s Table.

This is not just a leaf. It’s memory on a leaf.
