He got stuck stealing food
On October 9, 2024, in a quiet suburban neighborhood near Asheville, North Carolina, residents called emergency services after spotting something unusual sitting on the side of the road.
A young black bear… completely still, with a large plastic container stuck over its head.
“At first we thought it was injured… it wasn’t moving, just sitting there,” said Laura Jenkins, who was among the first to notice it.
As people slowly approached, they realized the bear wasn’t aggressive — it was disoriented.
And blind.
The container, a large snack jar, had completely trapped its head, preventing it from seeing or properly breathing. The bear had likely been stuck like this for hours.
Police arrived shortly after, blocking off the street while wildlife officers were called in.
But what really explained everything was the security footage captured the night before.
The small image from a nearby home camera shows the same bear quietly approaching a trash bin, sniffing around, before pulling out the container.
It wasn’t hunting.
It was just looking for food.
“They’re incredibly smart… but sometimes that curiosity gets them into trouble,” explained a wildlife officer on scene.
The bear had managed to get its head inside the jar while trying to reach the food — but the narrow opening made it impossible to pull back out.
By morning, exhausted and panicked, it had wandered into the street where it finally stopped moving.
Rescuers carefully approached, using a blanket to calm the animal before safely removing the container.
The moment it was freed, the bear hesitated for a second…
Then ran straight back into the woods.
No injuries. No aggression. Just a young animal that made a mistake.
Since then, local authorities have reminded residents to properly secure their trash.
Because sometimes, one small opening…
Is all it takes.
