Isi biji getah akan direndam untuk membuang getahnya bagi mengelakkan keracunan. Selepas itu ia diperam dan menjadi tempe. Selepas tamat zaman penjajahan Jepun di Tanah Melayu, biji getah tidak lagi menjadi bahan utama untuk menghasilkan tempe, tetapi ia diganti dengan kacang soya.
