May you have a beautiful holiday season.

For the last ten years, this little shop has been our home. We feel truly blessed to be serving Penang.

We’ve always believed in the "1% rule"—learning and fixing one small thing every day.

It’s hard to believe a decade has flown by so quickly!

Rather than rushing to grow, we’ve focused on the heart of what we do: investing back into coffee research, running field studies and improving operational systems to ensure we can offer good coffees at the best possible price, while providing a better workplace for young people.

Without this constant desire to learn and improve, we wouldn't be who we are today. Your support gives us a reason to keep growing our knowledge in order to push the boundary of possibilities.

Our space may not be perfect, but every tiny detail holds a story and a purpose.

As we head into our 11th year, we wish you a safe and peaceful festive season.

Field Work and Deep Studies

It’s that time of year again. We’re back in the fields, chasing the harvest while skilfully dodging typhoons, floods, and the occasional landslide—just another day at the office.

Why put ourselves through this? Why trade comfort for a little more knowledge and a lot more mud?

Because it’s about you — our customers.

It was never about the romance of trudging through a coffee farm or the pride of saying we’ve “seen the origins”.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us; it means constantly pushing quality higher while keeping your daily cup sensibly priced. To do that, we choose to invest in the tiny improvements most businesses wouldn’t bother with.

What some call overthinking, we call outthinking, outsmarting, and outlearning. We set our own research standards as we chase the First Principles of coffee.

First principles simply mean breaking things down to their most fundamental truths — the bits you can’t reduce any further — and then building our understanding back up from there.

That’s why you can still enjoy a RM3 double-shot espresso of our Penang blend today, even as global coffee prices climb sky-high.

Buying pricier beans might be easier, but it doesn’t solve anything for the people who visit us every day.

As we head into 2026, expect more Specialty coffees alongside our trusty Commercial range.

We’re a small team, but we’re here to serve you — and Penang — with everything we’ve got.

Stay safe during the heavy raining season. Our thoughts and prayers go to everyone suffering from severe flooding.

The Best There Ever Were

Today, Jason Loo (Photo 1, Right) from CONTOUR PJ, together with a cherished circle of friends including Jason Liew (Left) from MYLIBERICA Johor, has lovingly lifted our small nation to a remarkable 4th place in the World Barista Championship.

It is an extraordinary achievement, especially given the limited resources at hand.

Johor’s own MyLiberica coffee beans were thoughtfully and strategically blended with Finca Nuguo Gesha, creating a cup that carried brilliance.

Behind the scenes, countless individuals poured their hearts, time, and expertise into supporting Jason’s efforts. Their collective, selfless contributions have secured Malaysia’s best WBC result to date — a milestone that belongs to every soul who believed.

The challenge of reaching the Top 6 was immense — a true testament to their unwavering resolve, especially when faced with profound limitations in resources, time, and deep technical knowledge that competition demands.

What Jason Loo brought this year was a beautifully orchestrated constellation of experts — each contributing to optimising every detail. Jason’s journey was, in every sense, a masterclass in thoughtful leadership.

He approached his limitations with humility and wisdom, what needed to be sacrificed — and what had to be pursued with unyielding passion.

This triumph was not built in a year. Many pioneers in Malaysia’s coffee industry have tenderly laid the foundation long ago. Their legacy lives on — in the refined craft of tasting and roasting, in world-level judging, and in the tireless work of those exploring plant biology, soil nutrition and farm processing.

Equally, Jason Liew of MyLiberica Johor deserves a standing ovation. His fervour, his tireless drive, and — some might say — his beautifully stubborn commitment to elevating Liberica coffee have now been recognised on the world stage. In our hearts, he has single-handedly lifted the Liberica species, Johor, and Malaysia from the shadows into the brightest spotlight of the global coffee community.

To every person who worked quietly behind the scenes — your dedication, and belief have filled our hearts with immeasurable pride. Thank you.

The Unlimited, Tidak Terhad, Mugen (无限) Phase

As a small research-based café, we’re entering a new chapter as the year draws to a close — one we fondly call The Limitless Phase.

Back in 2024, we began laying the foundations to unlock our 2026 Unlimited Phase.

For a tiny café like ours, the journey has been... well, let’s just say our capital expenditure (CapEx) could make even a big company blink twice. But growth doesn’t come cheap — especially when you’re stubbornly chasing improvement, one humble cup at a time.

Our mantra remains simple:

☕ Improve 1% every day.
🔧 Fix 1 problem daily.
📚 Learn 1 new thing a day.

Of course, there are days when we miss a goal — sometimes by a little, sometimes by a mile (or a few espresso shots). But that’s alright. Every stumble is still a step forward, and we’re learning to dance with our mistakes too.

The Unlimited Phase is our prime directive in coffee research. No box, no border, no limit — just pure curiosity and a dash of caffeine-fuelled madness.

True research and fieldwork take time (and money — lots of it), but we’re in this for the long haul.

While many cafés proudly serve rare Geisha varieties and cross-varietals from celebrated estates, our small venture focuses on something different — the unseen and unheard smallholders, often families with only a handful of coffee trees, whose hard work rarely receives the respect it deserves.

They are the unrepresented, under-respected majority of the coffee world.

Our research aims to increase the cup value of their coffees, making high-quality, delicious coffee accessible to everyone — not just the privileged few.

It’s difficult, but once our work reaches a critical, reproducible stage, we plan to share our findings with major coffee industry players — from Malaysia to Japan, and from China to Colombia — to create an impact while quietly staying behind the scenes.

Thank you for being part of this little café in the heart of George Town, Penang.

Your support fuels our curiosity, our coffee, and our slightly over-caffeinated dreams.

Composing An Unusual Coffee.

The path we chose was never the usual one. Back in January 2015, our simple goal was to serve great coffee.

Along the way, we’ve discovered countless wonderful and delicious coffees. And yet, as the owners of a tiny family-run café in Penang, that discovery has also been bittersweet. Why? Because many Penangites who walk through our door can’t afford the finest of speciality coffees.

So, the question lingers:
Do we serve what we want?
Or do we serve what you want?

Between those two lies a gap – and that gap is called “the cost.”

Without quite realising it, we’ve ended up fighting on behalf of the everyday Penang folk, from bright-eyed eighteen-year-olds to wise octogenarians. We keep prices reasonable, even if it means our margins take the hit.

There’s no glamour in this. No romantic heroics. Just the steady joy of serving the community.

Balancing value while ingredient costs climb endlessly has been, strangely enough, an intellectual adventure. Our mission has become clear: serve the most delicious coffees at the lowest possible price point to Penangites.

We’re not chasing fame, awards, or shiny certificates on the wall. Our ambition is humbler, grounded in serving the daily coffee drinkers in our neighbourhood.

And because we’re not racing, we have the time to dig deep into the science of coffee – running experiments, testing ideas, failing, retrying, and sometimes discovering little breakthroughs along the way. That has been truly rewarding.

Now, if you want an expensive coffee, of course, we can do that. In fact, it’s laughably easy. Just throw money at the problem and voilà – you’ll have coffee that practically makes itself taste good. Honestly, expensive beans are the least challenging to roast and brew.

But our true challenge, and our joy, is this: to take the most reasonable coffees and roast them so well that they can stand shoulder to shoulder with the fancy, costly stuff.

So here’s to serving you, one humble cup at a time. The Penang way – inexpensive and good.

❤️ Penang.

The Spirit of Penang

What makes Penang great? It's the beautiful blend of diverse food, culture, and scenery. Here, everything good is just a stone's throw away.

Craving hawker food? A five-minute drive will get you to some of the best stalls.

Feeling like a hike up the hill? The jungle is calling. Want a fancy dinner and a stroll on the beach? They’re all within minutes of each other.

One of Penang’s most charming features is the harmonious blend of city life with the laid-back village "kampung" pace.

There's a freedom here you don't find everywhere else. You can wear your slippers to the coffee shop—no one will bat an eyelid.

We love Penang.

But what else are Penangites known for? Well, you could say we're the ultimate optimisation experts, but a more accurate, and perhaps funnier, term is "cheapskate."

We believe you shouldn't have to choose between cheap, good, and fast—you should get all three!

It’s this quirky side of us that drives everything we do. We've spent the past year building the coffee roastery, assembling the perfect equipment, designing custom control systems, and tirelessly experimenting to bring you the best value.

There have been wrong turns and "failures," but it was all part of the journey to find ways to offer higher value without sacrificing quality.

While many of our friends in the industry are focused on expensive, high-end coffees, we're dedicated to delivering maximum value.

We’re working hard to keep our coffee prices low, the flavours delicious, and serving them fast.

Now, we're finally ready!

This October, we will officially launch our roasted beans from the roastery.

Stay tuned for some truly delicious, sustainable, and plentiful coffee.

Memories of Those We Miss

As we step into the last quarter of the year, we’ve noticed a few familiar names in our industry closing their doors in Malaysia and Singapore.

At first, the news saddened us. Yet with time, we’ve come to see that choosing to close an unworkable location can be a brave step forward — a way of making space for new beginnings.

As a small café, our own journey has never been easy. We live and breathe through the experience of our guests, shaped by both the strengths and the limits of our little space. For years, we carried the weight of being “that café” with restrooms that didn’t work as they should. Every day we bowed, apologised, and endured the sting of 1-star “toilet” reviews.

Today, those restrooms are not only functional but beautiful — a reminder that persistence, though painful at times, does lead to change.

The toughest challenge, however, has always been people. Human resources in food and beverage industry is a constant test, and many of our peers eventually chose to walk away because of it.

We understand. Giving up isn’t failure — it’s simply choosing a different path. In this industry, endings are never the end of everything; they’re just the close of one chapter and the beginning of another.

That’s why we encourage you: when you find an independent shop that brings you joy, support them.

Every visit, every word of kindness, makes a difference.

We miss our friends who have moved on, but we’re also glad to see them finding new directions.

Change is part of life, and in its own way, it’s always good.

Have a beautiful weekend.
