Japanese ideas such as wabi-sabi 🍃 and ikigai ✨, along with many other cultural concepts that have traveled across the globe and become lifestyle trends, often lose much of their original depth in translation. This workshop with Japanese artist Hiro Namba 🖌️ brings these ideas back to their roots in Zen Buddhism 🧘‍♂️, explored through the living art of calligraphy.

In the 14th century, as the Renaissance flourished in Florence 🏛️, Zen culture reached its height in Kyoto ⛩️. While Europeans pursued the perfection of outward reality, Zen emphasized inner qualities, shaping the Japanese aesthetics of simplicity and restraint 🎐. It was only in the 20th century that European art began to embrace abstraction 🎨, inspired by these aesthetics a shift that later echoed in architecture, design, and fashion 👗.

Hiro Namba, descended from a samurai lineage of calligraphers ⚔️ and trained in art history in the United States 🇺🇸 and Italy 🇮🇹, will reveal how East and West diverged in their artistic paths. Through the duality of body and mind 🖤🧠, he will demonstrate calligraphy as a record of one’s state of being, inviting guests to engage with the tools and create their own marks 🖋️.
