Introduction to Gunung Orad's history, location, and recreational activities, including hiking and a cafe. All are welcome to visit.
Here's an overview of Gunung Orad (Dorod Orad)—its rich history, how to get there, what to enjoy, and why it's welcome to all visitors.
History & Significance
Gunung Orad, known in the local Bidayuh language as Dorod Orad, once served as a fortress. After their original stronghold at B**g Bratak was destroyed, the Bidayuh people established a settlement here. Today, the mountain is both a historical pilgrimage site and a natural attraction for modern-day adventurers.
Location
• Located in the Bau district of Sarawak, about 5–6 km northwest of Bau town, and near Kampung Grogo.
• The surrounding area is low elevation, turning into a moderate hill climb rather than a high-altitude trek.
• The site is part of the public park Taman Rekreasi Gunung Orad, maintained by JAWATANKUASA PEMBANGUNAN GUNUNG ORAD(JPGO) under the three (3) villages i.e. Kampung Grogo, Kampung Sibuluh and Kampung Nowang.
Gunung Orad Hiking Trail Description
• The trail to the summit of Gunung Orad (Dorod Orad) is short but rich in character, blending natural terrain with community-made features that make it safe and enjoyable for all ages. Typical hike takes 20-25 min to reached the summit. Basic amenities like benches and rest areas are also available.
• The initial part of the trail features belian wood steps—made from most durable tropical hardwoods. These steps are neatly constructed and help hikers safely ascend the steeper, slippery sections, especially after rain. Summit offers peaceful forest views and a quiet spiritual atmosphere.
• Recommended for: Light hikers and families looking for an easy outing. it is considered "easy" and doable with children, though supervision is advised.
• Trail Conditions: Shaded and moderately cool. Requires use of hands to climb some steeper sections; gloves can help with rope sections and slippery patches.
All are Welcome. No access restriction; people of all ages and fitness levels can come. Let me know if you’d like directions, nearby attractions, or seasonal best times to visit.
