In the mid-nineteenth century, many black men fled to Mexico seeking asylum, when the owners of black slaves asked Mexico to send their slaves back, the country replied, "There are no black slaves in Mexico, only black citizens." The angry slave owners sent their foremen to bring them back by force, but Mexico fought and killed to protect the black men.
