🇲🇽 A Taste of Mexican History at Turtle Bay Cafe!

Did you know that vanilla is native to Mexico? Long before it became one of the world’s favorite flavors, vanilla was cultivated and treasured by Indigenous peoples of Mexico, particularly the **Totonac people of Veracruz and Puebla**. It was later used by the Aztecs to flavor cacao drinks. (Gobierno de México)

After the Spanish arrived, vanilla made its way to Europe and eventually around the world. For centuries, Mexico remained its primary producer because the vanilla orchid depended on native pollinators. The development of hand-pollination in the 1800s eventually allowed vanilla to be grown successfully in other tropical regions. (Smithsonian Magazine)

Today, Mexican vanilla continues a tradition stretching back centuries and you can pick up a bottle right here at Turtle Bay Bakery and Cafe.
