Also known as the Strada Reale Suite, this is one of Domus Zamittello’s most distinctive rooms.

Its low, original vaulted ceiling gives the suite an intimate sense of character, while a freestanding bath, spacious living room and separate bedroom make it feel more like a private apartment within the house.

Family photographs and collected details add another layer of history to a room that is truly one of a kind.

On 7 April 1942, a German air raid struck Republic Street. The building across the street was destroyed. This one survived. The bombing raid that struck Republic Street on 7 April 1942 targeted the Royal Opera House, thirty metres from this door. The explosion destroyed one of southern Europe’s finest theatres. It also severely damaged the upper floors of this palazzo, the building that would not become a hotel for another seventy-six years.

The upper floors fell into disrepair. The ground level was let as commercial units. For decades, the building that had been the home of Italian Knights in 1623 and the Azopardi family in later centuries stood as storefronts rather than a residence.

In 2013, Count Alfred Manduca, a direct descendant, and the heir to a building that had outlasted four centuries of Valletta’s history, made the decision to restore it.

The ruins of the Royal Opera House are still there. Still visible from the balcony across the street, as they have been since that April morning.

At the heart of Domus Zamittello, the courtyard was always intended to be enjoyed open to the sky.

Its fully retractable skylight allows us to bring back that al fresco character, while naturally ventilating the space and helping to balance warm and cool air throughout the day.

Most of what happens in this hotel happens before you wake up.

Padam and Clarence begin their day early. By the time the first guests come down to breakfast, the corridors are already done. By check-out, the suites are prepared for arrival. The rhythm of the house is carried by people who are, by design, invisible when they are working.

We take the preparation of each room seriously. The quality of the linen. The exact placement of things. The small choices that determine whether a room feels right the moment you return to it, without you being able to say why. These details do not maintain themselves. They are the result of people who do the same things, correctly, every single day.

In August, Malta is in festa season. It has been since June, but August is when it reaches its fullest expression.

Across the island, parish churches that have stood for centuries fill the surrounding streets with lights. The banda’s march & the fireworks begin at dusk. The procession of the patron saint, carried on the shoulders of parishioners, sometimes for hours, moves through streets so narrow that the statue must be tilted to pass.

Every village has its own festa. Every village believes its own to be the finest. We keep a list of which feasts are happening nearest to Valletta on any given August weekend, and which ones we would not miss ourselves. Ask at the front desk. The car can be arranged. The evenings always exceed expectations.
