When the month of Wagaung arrives, many Myanmar Buddhists are reminded of one of the meaningful merit-making traditions in Myanmar Buddhist culture, the Saryay Tan Mae ceremony.

The Saryay Tan Mae ceremony is a traditional merit-making practice where donation items are prepared for members of the Sangha and offered through a drawing system.

The essence of this ceremony is more than simply offering donation items.
Saryay Tan Mae is not an offering made to one selected individual. It is offered with the intention of supporting the Sangha as a whole. Therefore, it is regarded as Sanghika Dana, a meritorious offering dedicated to the Sangha.

This tradition reflects the donor’s faith, respect for members of the Sangha, and the sincere intention to make offerings in a thoughtful and organized way.
