Why Pad Kra Pao is one of Thailand’s favorite dishes?

Pad Kra Pao (ผัดกะเพรา) is one of Thailand’s most beloved everyday dishes — and for good reason.

Made with fragrant holy basil, garlic, Thai chillies and your choice of meat, it is quickly stir-fried in a hot wok and usually served over jasmine rice with a crispy fried egg on top. Pork and chicken are especially common, but beef, seafood and vegetarian versions are also popular.

Its combination of spicy, savoury, aromatic and slightly sweet flavours, together with its affordability and quick preparation, has made Pad Kra Pao a staple of Thai street food, local restaurants and home cooking.

You can find it almost everywhere in Thailand — from small roadside stalls to modern restaurants. And while recipes vary, the unmistakable flavour of holy basil and Thai chilli is what gives the dish its identity.
