Christian Fletcher's big criticism on aerial surfing is that it doesn't keep in the tradition of the fathers of flight, skateboarders. He contends that you'd never see any self-respecting skater double-grab as they hover above the coping, that they'd get laughed right out of the pool. Over 20 years after Christian started punting, grabs like slobs and stalefishes are finally in vogue. But as you can see by this early '90s method, he's always been a little ahead of the times. There are many paths, short and long, for seekers of the culminating hover-and-stall through glassy morning beachbreak. Cory Lopez takes the abbreviated route to shapely Mexican peaks, his wetsuit still damp from a Stateside session. Photo: Anthony Ghiglia

Some waves are best surfed on the Web. Take this backless reefbreak off the coast of Australia. Drop a ski and jet over to the shifting wave field. Strap in or paddle out and hope for a glimpse of order among the chaos. The same swell met countless tapered pointbreaks on this morning. Yet an open ocean chase still remains a game fit for a select group of players. Photo: Rod Owen

"This wave is up in the desert where I'm from," said photographer Scott Bauer of his session shooting Margaret River's Dino Adrian. "We call it Monuments. It's got a heavy stigma about it and has broken a few bodies and boards." Photo: Scott Bauer

In early July the governor of Hawaii appropriated $20 million for the purchase and acquisition of Lipoa Point from the Maui Land and Pineapple Company, effectively preserving the environs of the greater Honolua Bay area for generations to come. Lahaina resident Dusty Payne celebrated by blowing the foam off of a tall frosty one. Photo: Dooma

John Florence lives right between Pupukea and Pipeline—both spots are about a football field's length from his backyard to the take-off zone. On this day he took a left out the door, where Zak Noyle, using a 16mm wide-angle lens, caught him on the descent. Photo: Noyle/A-Frame

“I shot this photo with my 70-200mm from the water,” says photographer Matt Clark. “I went for a slower shutter speed to capture some movement and that magical New York light. It was taken just west of New York City at the same spot I was actually surfing 13 years ago to the day on September 11th. I was 17 years old then and had just started college.”

The perfection of Sandspit is double edged. Because of its machine-like mechanics, the wave basically allows most competent tube riders to lock in for the 200-plus-yard duration (once, of course, they’ve managed to wrangle a set wave from the masses). This means that lineup hierarchy can be tricky, often pushing the takeoff zone deep into the wave’s only imperfect section—a vicious explosion of backwash that refracts off the jetty. Here, potential takers eye the success-to-failure ratio, calculating the odds of navigating short-term obstacles for long-term benefit. Photo: Nick Liotta

“This was late fall in New Jersey on the first of five days of fun surf,” says photographer Seth Stafford. “Conditions were perfect yet inconsistent, which made those few moments of perfect light stressful. You want everything to come together so badly, but you need the right wave. I was frantically swimming to put myself in position. This one’s color palette made the effort with it.” Photo: Seth Stafford
