A passionate tea grower since 1869, we carefully handpick tea leaves from estates that spread across elevations of 4,000–6,000 ft in the Golden Valley of Ceylon. With ample cool mountain air, gentle mists and a perfect level of rainfall create perfect microclimatic conditions for tea cultivation.

In this pristine environment, the tender leaf develops a distinct character of strong, aromatic and full of life. Carefully nurtured and perfected through generations of artisanal expertise, these leaves embody the essence of the Golden Valley.

A tea shaped by heritage, purpose in every step and a premium taste you can feel.

Mitsui, one of the leading tea buyers in Japan, visited Bogawantalawa Tea Estates after nearly 24 years. Their last visit was during the tenure of Mr. Bernard Holsinger, when he was the Superintendent of Norwood Estate. At that time, they were escorted by the late Mr. Michael De Soyza of Unilever, a well-known personality in the tea industry as well as in the cricketing world.

It was truly a pleasure to welcome the Mitsui team once again, this time to Bogawana Estate, under the supervision of Mr. Robin Winter, Superintendent. They were accompanied by one of their main buyers, Kirin Holdings Company. The visit was coordinated through Heritage Tea Ceylon, another leading tea exporter in the country. Mr. Revanka De Silva, Director of Heritage Teas, and Mr. Roshan David, General Manager – Business and Product Development, accompanied the delegation during the visit.

A warm welcome ceremony was arranged by the management of Bogawana Estate, hosting the Japanese national flag alongside the Sri Lankan flag and the company flag, in honor of the visiting delegation.
The buyers toured the factory and tasted the latest teas produced, including the artisan teas, which impressed them greatly. They also held discussions on our sustainability programmes and CSR activities, which they appreciated. The team visited the Child Development Centres and conducted separate discussions with factory staff and estate workers, which concluded very positively.

We were privileged to welcome Mr. Stijn Van Schoonlandt, Director for Europe at the International Tea Masters Association (ITMA), to Bogawantalawa Tea Estates. As a respected European tea professional with deep involvement in blending, sourcing, and specialty tea development, his visit focused on evaluating our conventional teas as well as our handcrafted artisanal range for the European market.

The visit commenced at Norwood Estate, where Mr. Van Schoonlandt was received by the Superintendent and factory team for a comprehensive tour of the manufacturing facility. He observed the production of orthodox teas and expressed appreciation for the high standards maintained in cleanliness, manufacturing practices, and overall quality.

The delegation then proceeded to Kotiyagalla Estate, where particular focus was given to the handmade tea range. With growing demand for artisanal teas in Europe, Mr. Van Schoonlandt showed keen interest in the craftsmanship and detail involved in the production process. The various stages of manufacture were demonstrated, followed by a tasting session of selected teas.

Mr. Van Schoonlandt commended Bogawantalawa Tea Estates for its commitment to quality and innovation across both conventional and specialty tea segments. He highlighted the strong potential of these teas in the European market and we look forward to building a strong and lasting partnership together.
