Today, I was pleased to receive notice that the renewal of our trademark for the words 'Doi Ka Noi' and the chilli head girl logo has been approved in my name. Protecting the logo that I had designed as a surprise for Noi and the restaurant name which came from of a funny conversation between the two of us, is very important for me to maintain control of it.

The original brief for the logo was simple..."I want a picture of Noi with chillis on her head, holding a fish."

Just days before Noi passed away we had ordered t-shirts to be printed with designs linked to our book. Fortunately I was able to cancel, but with the intention of printing at a later date.

And so here they are.

Chapters from the book: Jaew Tam Goy Laab

This is a limited edition t-shirt. In future another four different chapters will be printed.

Mosaic: The inside cover of our book features the mosaic at Wat Xieng Tong in Luang Prabang. This shirt features one of our favourite parts of the mosaic - the fishermen returning home with their catch.

Both t-shirts have the Doi Ka Noi logo inside the back neck. Available in S,M, L. XL at $25 each and 2XL at $28 + plus postage.

Only the colours shown are available.

I also have a few of our classic Doi Ka Noi shirts left.

White: S, L at $25 and Free size $28

Green: Free size only $28

All shirts are cotton and excellent quality. No returns. Shipping is
Thai registered mail with tracking but is at your own risk. Postage within Thailand is free.

Ordering is old-school. You will need to contact me directly. To ensure quality, the t-shirts have been printed and I hold the stock. They are not printed to order and shipped by a merch fulfillment company overseas.

Email [email protected] for shipping costs making sure you include your
address.

There's a good piece on CNA by Soh Wee Ling about Laos which mentions Noi. It's nice they didn't edit this out given the length lead time to publications.

Noi's character, food and hospitality left a lasting impression on so many during the decade we were open...and continues through the pages of our book, A Child of the Rice Fields: Recipes from Noi's Lao Kitchen.

On the banks of the Mekong, from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, this writer explores Laos through family travel, local food and the country’s hidden wartime history.

No cigar or twirling bow tie but last night my image entitled Bomb Spoons received a Highly Commended at the World Food Photographer of the Year Awards. It was one of seven images selected in the Politics of Food category.

If you are in London this week you can see the exhibition at the Mall Galleries.

"In Xieng Khouang Province, northern Laos, villagers make spoons from bombs. Two million tons of cluster bombs were dropped on Laos during the Vietnam War, making it the most heavily bombed country in history per capita. UXO contamination has killed and injured more than 2,000 people from 1999 to 2004."

I also had two other images shortlisted but they didn't make the final - a Linten woman cooking in Food in Action, and an Akha boy with a harvest of winter melon under the family bed in Politics of Food.

Also...fabulous piece of coverage from Italy by Elle Italia online and also in print in their specialist food magazine ‘Elle Gourmet’ featuring my finalist image at the World Food Photographer of the Year Awards.

I hope this has in someway helped raise awareness of the UXO problem in Laos. One would hope the image and the achievement would get coverage here too...
