We were doing a bit of light reading on the history of smoothie bowls and it turns out they were literally discovered by accident 😭🩷

Açaí has been eaten in the Amazon for centuries. Brazilian locals were having it with fish and shrimp (totally different era 😅). Then surfers started blending it thick with granola and banana for pre-wave energy and that changed everything.
Then the internet found out and here we are.

Now we're in Luang Prabang putting our own spin on it. Spirulina, mango, goji berries, pandan, fresh mint, coconut, chocolate, peanut butter... all the good stuff that we love (100% plant-based and definitely shrimp free, promise).

The Happy Cat is open every day from 8:30AM until 10PM (kitchen closes 9:30PM). You can have smoothie bowls for breakfast, lunch or dinner, up to you.

The fiery, fragrant basil in our Tofu Mushroom Pad Kapao isn't just any basil, it's HOLY basil (aka "kapao"), and it's a very special little herb.

In Thai & Lao culture, holy basil has been used for centuries not just for flavour but in traditional medicine, it helps with digestion & easing stress.

It only releases its full peppery-clove flavour bomb when it hits a screaming hot pan (that's why your pad kapao smells like an absolute dream when it arrives!)

🐝 And what we love the most: the plant is a pollinator magnet, so growing it locally = happy bees = happy planet 🌍

Our Pad Kapao is fully plant-based, served with whole grain rice, and can be served with a fried egg if you want. Have it for breakfast, lunch or dinner, up to you!

Something we are really proud of at The Happy Cat is being part of something bigger than our little café 🙏💪

We have had the chance to sit at the table twice now as a stakeholder in the development of Laos's National Plastic Action Plan, consulted by the UNDP alongside the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. As the only certified plastic free restaurant in Luang Prabang, we have learned a lot about what it actually takes to run a food business this way, and we were happy to share that experience with the people working on national policy.

Going plastic free has always come down to the same three things for us: the people we feed, the animals we share this world with, and the planet we all call home. Plastic causes real harm to all three, ending up in waterways, in soil, in the food chain. Fully biodegradable takeaway packaging was one of the first decisions we made here, and it remains one of the easiest to stand behind.

We are just one small café in Luang Prabang. But we do think that change tends to start small. Someone makes a switch, someone else notices, and suddenly it feels a little more possible. If our experience can help make it simpler or more affordable for other businesses to phase out plastic and styrofoam, we are genuinely glad to play that part.
