At the center of every Lao table sits a small basket of sticky rice alongside a tiny bowl of jeow. Jeow is the funky, fiery paste that brings heat, pungency, and life to our meals. More than just a condiment, jeow is the very heart of Lao cuisine. Born from a culture of farming, fishing, and foraging, a humble meal of sticky rice and jeow becomes something deeply festive: simple, bold, and communal.
Every Lao family has their own favorite jeow, shaped by memory, region, and tradition. Here at Little Lao, weโve begun gathering some of our own family recipes to build a growing library of jeow. If your favorite jeow is not yet part of our archive, please tell us โ or even better, teach us.
