Lumiere continues to celebrate the cinema of Cannes Films festival and this weekend we screen the Japanese movie The Mourning Forest, directed by Naomi Kawase.

Shigeki, a resident of a retirement home, is cared for by Machiko, a staff member grieving her lost child. After his birthday, she takes him on a countryside drive that ends in an accident, leading them into the forest.

Poetry of mourning and soothing nature, The Mourning Forest won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2007.

Lumiere brings to Phnom Penh the Cannes Films festival with Souleymane’s Story, the incredibly powerful film by Boris Lojkine.

As he pedals through the streets of Paris as a food delivery driver, Souleymane goes over his story in his head. In two days, he has his asylum interview, the key to obtaining legal status in France. But Souleymane isn’t ready.

Souleymane’s Story made a huge impact at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, and non-professional actor Abou Sangare won the Best Performance award and the movie won the Jury Prize, all in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.

This weekend, Lumiere continues to celebrate in advance the Cannes Films festival with Loves Of A Blonde, the second feature film by the irresistible Miloš Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Amadeus).

A factory manager persuades the military authorities to station soldiers nearby, in the hope of boosting his female employees’ morale. However, one of the workers falls in love with a passing pianist rather than a soldier. On a whim, she follows him to Prague, where she faces the cold disapproval of his middle-class parents.

Loves Of A Blonde was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1967 Oscars, nominated at the Venice Film Festival, and was selected for Cannes Classics in 2019.

This weekend, Lumiere kicks off the Cannes Films festival early with the classic Czech film Ikarie XB-1.

In the year 2163, a group of astronauts embarks on a fifteen-year journey through space, hoping to discover life in another galaxy. It is a perilous journey during which they are confronted with the ruins of the 20th century, the terrifying vastness of the cosmos, and their own mortality.

A science fiction classic that inspired the giants Andrei Tarkovsky and Stanley Kubrick, and was selected for Cannes Classics in 2016.

This documentary chronicles Cambodia’s vibrant 1960s music scene, where stars like Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Serey Sothea fused Western Rock 'n' Roll with traditional Khmer rhythms. This golden era of packed clubs and hit records flourished until April 1975, when the Khmer Rouge abruptly silenced the music.

This weekend, we are screening two short documentaries: 'Angkor: The Lost Empire', which tells the story of the glorious Khmer Empire from its birth to its fall; and 'The Story We Share', in which a teenager from Phnom Penh discovers village life and what it means to be Khmer.
