Better known as Sam Sharpe, Samuel Sharpe, a Creole slave, was born in Montego Bay, Jamaicain 1801. Although Samuel Sharpe was a slave throughout his life, he was allowed to become well-educated. Because of his education he was respected by other slaves, and he was a well known preacher and leader. Sharpe was a Deacon at the Burchell Baptist Church in Montego Bay, whose pastor was Rev Thomas Burchell. Sam Sharpe spent most of his time travelling to different parishes in Jamaica educating the slaves about Christianity and freedom. In 1975, the government of independent Jamaica proclaimed Sharpe a National Herowith the posthumous title of Rt. Excellent Samuel Sharpe. Also in 1975, Sam Sharpe Teachers' College in Granville, a suburb of Montego Bay, was founded and named in his honor. He is also on the modern Jamaican $50 dollar bill.

Sir Alexander Bustamante was born on February 24, 1884 , the son of Robert Constantine Clarke, an Irish planter and Mary Clarke (nee Wilson) a Jamaican of mixed blood. He was named William Alexander Clarke, but later changed his name in 1944 to William Alexander Bustamante. He was the second of five children of the Clarke family.

Though initially a supporter of the Federation of the West Indies, during the 1950s, Bustamente gradually opposed the union. He agitated for Jamaica to become independent of Great Britain. He said that the JLP would not contest a by-election to the federal parliament. His rival and cousin, Premier Norman Manley, called a referendum on the issue in 1961; Jamaicans voted for the nation's withdrawal from the Federation.

After Jamaica was granted independence in 1962, Bustamante became Jamaica's first Prime Minister and served until 1967. Bustamante also held the position of Mayor of Kingston in 1947 and 1948. In 1965 he withdrew from active participation in public life, and the true power was held by his deputy, Donald Sangster.

Paul Bogle (ca. 1822 – 24 October 1865) was a Jamaican Baptist deacon and is a National Hero of Jamaica. He was a leader of the 1865 Morant Bay Protests, which agitated for justice and fair treatment for all in Jamaica. Leading the Morant Bay rebellion, he was captured and hanged on 24 October 1865 in the Morant Bay Court House by the United Kingdom authorities.

It was only after independence in 1962, along with the perspective allowed by the passage of time, that the contribution of Paul Bogle to the development of independent Jamaica was fully recognised.

When the Order of National Hero was established in 1969, The Right Excellent Paul Bogle was one of the five individuals named as National Heroes of Jamaica.

Bogle is depicted on the heads side of the Jamaican 10 cent coin. His face was also depicted on the Jamaican two-dollar bill, from 1969 until 1989, when it was phased out and the bill no longer used in Jamaican currency.

The Paul Bogle High School in the parish of his birth is named after him.

He is referenced in the name of the London-based publishing company Bogle–L'Ouverture.

Nanny was a leader of the Maroons at the beginning of the 18th century. She was known by both the Maroons and the British settlers as an outstanding military leader who became, in her lifetime and after, a symbol of unity and strength for her people during times of crisis.
Her spirit of freedom was so great that in 1739, when Quao signed the second Treaty (the first was signed bv Cudjoe for the Leeward Maroons a few months earlier) with the British, it is reported that Nanny was very angry and in disagreement with the principle of peace with the British, which she knew meant another form of subjugation.

George William Gordon (1820-1865) was a Jamaican businessman and politician who was a leading critic of the policies of the governor of Jamaica Edward Eyre. On Eyre's orders, he was executed after the Morant Bay rebellion. Gordon's ex*****on created huge controversy in Britain, and several attempts were made to charge Eyre with murder. On the centenary of his death, he was proclaimed a National Hero of Jamaica.

On 27 October 1960, the Jamaican Parliament named the building in this building where the Parliament Meeting will be kept in his honour. It was named the George William Gordon House often called "Gordon House".

In 1965 Gordon was given the nation's highest honor, Order of National Hero. When Jamaica decimalized its currency in 1969, Gordon appeared on the ten-dollar note (now a coin).
