Coffee arrived in Cameroon with the Germans in 1905, with Arabica being the first variety introduced. Robusta was introduced later from Congo and Indonesia.
Today, Robusta accounts for the majority of the country’s production, while most coffee is grown by smallholder farmers working within diversified agricultural systems.
Rich volcanic soils, high altitudes and well-defined rainy seasons create excellent conditions for coffee cultivation. Yet limited infrastructure, low productivity and decades of economic challenges have made it difficult for Cameroon to reach its full potential as a coffee origin.
Among its most fascinating treasures is Coffea charrieriana, a rare coffee species naturally free of caffeine, discovered in Cameroon and later cultivated in the Bakossi region.
Cameroon is an origin with a rich history and plenty of potential still to be explored. 🇨🇲☕
