The Sir Rocco Forte Captain's Trophy returned to Verdura this September, four days of golf on the Sicilian coast from the 10th to the 13th. Amateur players from across the world took to the East Links and West Shore, with Sir Rocco Forte hosting and playing himself, and Ryder Cup player Colin Montgomerie joining as guest of honour.

Two rounds of golf ran alongside Sicilian dinners, an evening with Montgomerie and a closing gala, the fairways opening onto the Mediterranean throughout.

Climb to the old Saracen Tower, raised in the sixteenth century to watch the coast, and find inside it a room given over to something quieter. Nagori is Fulvio Pierangelini's meeting of Sicily and Japan, two islands set far apart yet bound by the same closeness to the sea, the same reverence for fish and for what the water gives.

The idea is not fusion in the usual sense. Rather than lay exotic ingredients over one another, the kitchen looks at Sicilian produce through Japanese eyes, the precision of sushi-making brought to the catch pulled from the Mediterranean that morning. Raw and cooked sit side by side, dishes lifted by greens from the resort's own vegetable garden, everything held to the season and to the place it comes from.
