Efficiency was never really the point here.

Thick walls.
A building that has been standing since before anyone thought to photograph it.

The room is large enough to actually feel at home in.
The neighborhood is the kind Romans live in, not the kind they point tourists toward.

Every morning, I make the same coffee.
Same cup. Same amount. Same time.

My guests sometimes ask if I get bored of it.
I tell them: when you find something that works, you don’t look for a replacement. You just appreciate it more each time.

This is also, I think, how we feel about Rome.
We have been here for decades. We still find things that surprise us.

From someone who has lived here for decades.

Not a Sunday. Not in summer. The crowd logic in Rome is almost always the opposite of what people expect.

This is where we live and eat. The restaurants here serve Romans, not itineraries.

Show up at 7 and you will be eating alone in an empty room. Wait until the city does.

Summer storms arrive fast and leave fast. The people who know this stay dry.

Nobody tells you these things before you arrive.
And honestly, most people figure them out on day three — which is also usually the day the trip starts feeling right.
We have been hosting guests here since 2011. Every year, the same surprises.
