Kría 🖤🩶🤍

The Arctic tern, Arctic tern (kría in Icelandic), is one of Iceland's most remarkable summer visitors. These elegant birds migrate farther than any other animal on Earth, traveling between Antarctica and Iceland every year. A single Arctic tern can fly more than 70,000 kilometers (43,000 miles) annually! Just incredible.

Arctic terns arrive in Iceland in late spring to nest and raise their chicks during the long days of the Icelandic summer. They are fiercely protective parents and are famous for dive-bombing anyone who gets too close to their nests. If you've ever walked near a nesting area and suddenly felt a sharp peck on your head, you've likely met an Arctic tern defending its family!

Despite their small size, these birds spend much of their lives chasing summer, experiencing more daylight than almost any other creature on the planet. Watching an Arctic tern gracefully soaring above Iceland's coastline is a true sign that summer has arrived.

One fascinating bit of local history is that people in Hveragerði used geothermal hot springs as their kitchen, lowering pots directly into the naturally boiling ground to cook meals and bake bread long before modern stoves existed.

See you in Hveragerði 👋

There’s something magical about standing beside a geyser as it suddenly bursts to life 🌋💨

If you’re exploring Hveragerði, make sure to stop by the The Geothermal Park / Hveragarðurinn, Hveragerði Geothermal Park and watch the gorgeous geyser erupt right in the heart of town. Surrounded by steaming vents, bubbling hot springs, and the raw energy of Icelandic nature, it’s one of those moments you won’t forget.

While you’re there, try geothermal rye bread baked in the ground, boil an egg in the hot water, and soak in the unique atmosphere of Iceland’s geothermal town. ♨️
