One thing that surprises a lot of people out on the glacier is that the ice is actually safe to drink.

Most guests assume it must be contaminated somehow. It isn't. Glacier ice forms from layers of compacted snow built up over centuries, well before most of what we've put into the atmosphere, and as long as it's away from sediment or volcanic ash, it's clean.

That said, drinking it in large quantities isn't something we'd recommend. Pure glacial meltwater has almost no electrolytes, so while a piece here and there is perfectly fine, your body wouldn't thank you for making a habit of it.

Ropework has something special about it. A lot of guests arrive a little nervous about getting close to the glacier's deeper features. Some moulins, as they're properly called, can go down 30 or 40 meters, so approaching them even with safety measures in place is not something you do every day.

That's where the group comes in. The more experienced guests, or just the fearless ones, go first, and something shifts. People who would have never imagined standing at the edge of one of those monsters end up doing exactly that, and walking away with something they didn't expect to find on a glacier tour. A new courage, a side of themselves they didn't know existed.

That's the beauty of going in groups. We push each other, and we grow together.

Many of our guests arrive not knowing what to expect. They know they're going to step onto the second biggest glacier in Europe, but they usually wonder: what will it actually feel like? What will we do out there?

And honestly, it's simpler than you'd think. Our guides lead the way, make sure you're safe and comfortable, and from there you just get to explore. That means touching the ice, finding new spots, taking in views that don't look like anywhere else on earth, and letting the glacier surprise you a little.

At the end of the day, you make the hike. We just guide.

just passed Jökla 2, Iceland's hard ice guiding certification provided by .is .

We've been watching her develop for a while now. The way she reads conditions, how she manages a group when the terrain gets technical, the depth of her knowledge about the ice. The certification makes official what we already knew.

The glacier changes constantly. Every season brings new conditions, new terrain and challenges that weren't there the last time around. Keeping our guides trained is how we stay ahead of that, and we're proud to have people who take it seriously.

Proud of you, Ma**ca.

Summer is slowly arriving, but this is still Iceland.

Here, the weather changes by the hour. One moment the sun breaks through the clouds and lights up the mountains in gold, and the next, a cold mist rolls across the landscape and turns everything quiet and cinematic.

That unpredictability is part of what makes this place feel alive. Every day feels different. Every drive, every hike, every glacier walk becomes its own experience. The same location never truly looks the same twice.

And that constant transformation is what makes exploring this island so special.

Winter is gone, and the glacier is changing rapidly. With the warmer temperatures come new ways of experiencing the ice.

During the colder months, everything feels stable. We know where the most beautiful formations are, and we can return to them again and again with confidence. Summer is different. It is dynamic, unpredictable, and constantly reshaping the glacier’s landscape.

Every day we step onto the ice, something has changed. New crevasses open, ice walls collapse, hidden caves appear, and familiar routes transform overnight. The hike becomes less about following a path and more about exploration.

What makes this season special is that we often experience these changes for the first time alongside our guests. There is a shared sense of discovery that makes every tour feel more personal, more alive. At times, it feels less like a guided hike and more like being part of an expedition.

One of the people who embodies that spirit best is , a seasoned guide whose knowledge, calm presence, and curiosity turn each journey onto the glacier into something memorable.

What happens after work, when everybody's tired of the day? Some people want a couch and a quiet evening. Others go back to the ice to hone their skills. Maybe it sounds cliché, but being a guide is truly a lifestyle.
