Darjeeling tea, India's first GI-tagged product, sells globally as a premium brand. But Darjeeling produces only 6,000 tonnes yearly — yet over 40,000 tonnes is sold worldwide under its name.
The gap is filled largely by Nepal's Ilam tea, grown on the same Himalayan mountains, at the same altitude, by the same Gorkha community that built Darjeeling's industry in the 1860s.
When Nepal tried exporting this tea into India, India tightened border restrictions to protect the Darjeeling brand.
One mountain range. Two countries. One name worth millions.
