One of the biggest issues that I confront everyday as a human being is about giving respect to other human being.

Manhandling, roughing up the staff, being abusive these are few things that I have come to realize are pretty common in restaurant industry. Not paying the salary is another such common practice. I was not shocked to know about it when I entered the restaurant industry but was definitely surprised to see the extent to which such practice is prevalent. It doesn’t shock me because I see this in every fabric of India. We aren’t really someone who can take pride in the manner of our upbringing or how we bring up our kids with respect to laying proper emphasis on how to treat one another, how to value one’ privacy, how to have respect for the other and dignity of labour. And it is not just limited to any one class. Even amongst the lower class this is quite prevalent and they treat each other with as much disdain and rawness as we do. This has often proven to be my biggest challenge. I can not bring myself to insult a person no matter what. I try to teach my own staff the value of respecting others but so far it hasn’t been a great success. May be an odd staff guy has picked up on it but I realize it is a lesson that can be laughed off on the back!

There are times I see atrocious behavior from customers too in the way they call a waiter or a manager. I usually do not hold back. I have always believed we in India have put way too much emphasis on hospitality in hospitality industry. To me customer is not God. To me it is an equal relationship and it is a professional relationship. I would respect my customer as a human being, first and foremost. Nothing more BUT NOTHING LESS. And so I do not hold back in requesting a customer to mind the way they speak or talk to a waiter. It may cost me a customer but just as I can not withstand my staff being rude to a customer, I can not as well withstand a customer being rude to my staff, for no reason.

But as I mentioned earlier this is one aspect of restaurant business that I haven’t been able to address and change even a wee bit. Again I am not surprised. But my endeavor shall continue!

F-FToS - Food - From the Other Side.
================================

We all love food. Most of us anyway! Some of us eat to live and some live to eat! Whatever the case may be there is always another side to a story. The story is of running a restaurant business. There are aspects to it that have challenged and continue to challenge me as a human being. This is an attempt to tell such a story. And with it there shall be a good dose of funny anecdotes, recipes etc.
