Get • Scoops of Mumbai Ep:4 - Taj Ice Cream, Bohri Mohalla — 139 years old, ₹100 a scoop, and genuinely the most underrated ice cream in Mumbai!
Hand-churned in copper moulds. Three ingredients: milk, fruit, sugar. No machines, no preservatives, no shortcuts. The same recipe since 1887 — when Valilji Jalaji arrived in Mumbai from Kutch with nothing but an idea.
I had the lychee and the guava. The lychee tastes like actual lychee — floral, clean, real fruit. The guava is something else entirely. Dense, deep, and they serve it with chilli salt on top. That combination is unreal.
This place used to deliver ice cream to Madhubala. The Shah of Iran asked for it by name when he visited Mumbai.
It’s tucked in the lanes of Bhendi Bazaar, opposite Imdadiya Bakery. You will walk past it if you don’t know to look. Now you know.
📍 Taj Ice Cream, 36 Khara Tank Street, Bohri Mohalla, Bhendi Bazaar, Mumbai
💰 ₹100 onwards — cash preferred
⏰ 10:30am – 11:30pm daily

Get • “In 1887, a man from Kutch arrived in Bombay with nothing but a dream. My great-great-great-grandfather, Valilji Jalaji, came here with nothing but a recipe and a belief. He set up a small corner in Bhendi Bazaar, mixed fruit with milk, and served it cold. No shop. No signage. Just honesty in a cup.
The name Taj came from Tajuddin, a loyal customer who used to travel all the way from Kutch just for our ice cream. My ancestor didn’t name it after himself. He named it after a man who couldn’t stay away. That’s the kind of people we come from.
People started calling us Icecreamwala, which became our surname! Earned on the streets of Mumbai, one scoop at a time. Over the years, the faces in our line humbled us. Madhubala was a regular. When the Shah of Iran visited Mumbai, he had two demands: ice cream from Taj and biryani from Delhi Darbar. They all stood in the same line. They all ate from the same cup. We never had a separate entrance for anyone.
But what I’m most proud of has nothing to do with famous names. It’s the recipe. Three ingredients: milk, fruit, sugar. No colour. No preservatives. No shortcuts. I still hand-churn every batch for nearly three hours. The same copper sancha my ancestor used in 1887 – I use it today. Six generations. Same corner. Same recipe. Same hands.
The city has changed everything around us. But we haven’t moved. Haven’t modernised. Haven’t chased trends. Because my grandfather always told me, the day you start cutting corners is the day you stop being Taj.
Every evening when I see the line stretching out onto the street, I feel something I can’t fully explain. Pride, yes. But mostly gratitude, that Mumbai still shows up. That people still bring their children here, the way their parents brought them, the way their grandparents came before that. We’re not just selling ice cream. We’re keeping a promise that was made 138 years ago. And we intend to keep it.”
