Misal pav (spicy curry with bread – “Misal” mean mixture. “Pav” is the Indian colloquial for bread) is a traditional Maharashtrian-Indian dish and Maharashtra's most popular breakfast dish.
It consists of spicy curry made of a particular variety of sprouted lentil called "Matki" which has a sweet aroma, mutter, chick peas and chilly powder gravy, topped with Farsan or sev (Indian noodles), poha / chiwda, onions, lemon and coriander and served with PAV toasted with butter.
Misal in its original form is prepared using onion, ginger, garlic and other spices. It has two parts, a thick curry of matki called "Usal" which has less water content and watery and spicy "cut" or a "bite". Usually people mix these two according to their taste and requirement.
It is basically a spicy recipe but very tasty and nutritious. One can see red chilli powder and oil floating over (called as Tarri in local language). It’s hot, delicious; “my tongue is on fire, my nose and eyes water” – the true test of a genuine MISAL. There are various ways to prepare it. Its sweeter version is famously known as Brahman Misal.
Misal Pav is certainly not a ‘junk’ food. If made with all the proper ingredients, it’s zesty, healthy, nourishing snack. It's real filler; this is one breakfast you must not miss. There are different types of Misal in Maharashtra like… Kolhapuri Misal, Khandeshi Misal, Puneri Misal, Mamledar Misal, Dahi Misal & so on….and now available @ Street Food in Kathmandu, Nepal.
