"नाना शंकरशेट्ट जयंती"
जगन्नाथ शंकरशेठ मुरकुटे "नाना" शुंकरशेठ आणि जगन्नाथ शंकरशेठ मुरकुटे; 10 फेब्रुवारी 1803 - 31 जुलै 1865 हे भारतीय समाजसेवी आणि शिक्षणतज्ज्ञ होते. त्यांचा जन्म 1803 मध्ये मुंबईतील दैवज्ञ ब्राह्मण समाजातील श्रीमंत मुरकुटे कुटुंबात झाला.
शिक्षणातील योगदान:
नाना शैक्षणिक क्षेत्रात सक्रिय होते. 1856 मध्ये ब्रिटिश सरकारने खाजगी संस्थेला काही अनुदानाची घोषणा केली होती पण त्याचा फायदा घेत नानांनी गिरगावात इंग्रजी मराठी शाळा सुरू केली. हिंदू समाजाच्या तीव्र विरोधाला न जुमानता त्यांनी स्टुडंट्स लिटररी अँड सायंटिफिक सोसायटीने सुरू केलेल्या मुलींच्या शाळेसाठी निधी दिला.

गिरगाव परिसरात संस्कृत सेमिनरी, संस्कृत वाचनालय असे इतर शैक्षणिक प्रकल्पही त्यांनी सुरू केले. शिक्षण हे मातृभाषेतूनच व्हायला हवे याविषयी नानांचे ठाम आणि स्पष्ट मत होते. मुंबईतील ब्रिटिश शिक्षण मंडळाने त्यांच्या प्रस्तावाला कडाडून विरोध केला. पण जिद्दी असलेल्या नानांनी 1 मे 1847 रोजी शिक्षणाच्या माध्यमाच्या प्रश्नावर एक सर्वसमावेशक विधान जारी केले ज्यामध्ये ते म्हणाले, "इंग्रजी भाषेच्या अभ्यासाला माझा अजिबात विरोध नाही, परंतु ती भारतीय भाषांमध्ये आणली पाहिजे." शेवटी, एक तडजोड झाली ज्यामध्ये स्थानिक भाषांमध्ये शिक्षण आणि इंग्रजीमध्ये उच्च शिक्षण देण्याचे मान्य करण्यात आले.

लोकांची शिक्षणाची गरज नानांना कळली होती. त्यांनी बॉम्बे युनिव्हर्सिटीच्या स्थापनेत आणि कामकाजात माऊंस्टुअर्ट एल्फिन्स्टनला सहकार्य करून कला, कायदा, विज्ञान, वैद्यक या विषयांचा भक्कम पाया रचला.
