Finally reached Imphal

Assam — The Accord, The Discord traces the NRC saga to its genesis, the landmark agreement Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi signed with the All Assam Students’ Union, the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad and the State government that was announced on Independence Day, 1985. The detection of foreigners and constitutional protections for the Assamese people were among the core promises of the accord that put a lid on the six-year-long Assam Agitation against illegal immigrants in the State.

Author Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty goes back in time to show that much in the State is hard-won, from its very existence as part of the Indian Union to the setting up of oil refineries, in a bid to illustrate how the intractable nature of dispute resolution and the need to juggle national perspective with sub-regional imperative combined with the dilatory tactics of New Delhi to cast a long shadow of 1985 on Assam. If 30 rounds of talks in Indira Gandhi’s tenure preceded the Rajiv accord, its implementation has been thirty years and more in the making.

Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty is an Indian journalist and writer from the state of Assam, based in the city of New Delhi.Currently the deputy editor with the digital news publication The Wire, she was formerly the Northeast India correspondent of the English language national newspaper The Hindu. She has been the subject of widespread critical acclaim for the documentation on the Assam Movement, the Assam Accord and the insurgencies in Assam in her debut book Assam: The Accord, The Discord.

Barooah Pisharoty has been the recipient of a fellowship from the Centre for Development Studies since 2011 following her series of news stories on the loss of livelihood caused by soil erosion on Assam's Majuli island. In 2017, she was the recipient of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards for her reportage on housing segregation among Hindus and Muslims in the city of Delhi.
She is a alumna of the Guwahati University from where she graduated in 1995. Barooah Pisharoty began her career at the national news agency United News of India.

It was a fabulous evening yesterday with lovely rendition of A classical folk instrument Tar shennai by Oja Nishikanta Huidrom and beautiful acoustic instrumental music by . oja Nishikanta is a specially abled Tar Shennai maestro who had composed beautiful music with many known artists of Manipur. He has contributed a lot in his musical genre ; even running a small musical school called sa re ga ma at blind school, Takyel. The Tar Shennai player is not even handful in Manipur and Oja Nishi feels he is still ready to accept students to pass down whatever he had learnt from his guru.

My heartfelt gratitude to all who have come and shown love and respect to this team.
