For years, the calls lasted four minutes. “Eaten?” “Yes.” “Take care.” That was the whole conversation, passed down like a family recipe neither of them chose.
Neither said much. Neither knew how to start.

Tonight, somewhere between the rasam and the second helping of rice, the son asked a real question. Not about work. About his father — his years, his regrets, the things he never asked because he was too busy growing up to notice his father was also just a man, figuring it out.

This is not that meal.

This is the one you order without checking the menu twice. The one where the table goes quiet because everyone’s too busy eating to talk. Karivepaku paneer that earns its heat. It opens quietly; a fritter to wake the appetite, vepudus that have outgrown the word ‘side’. Pappu holds the centre, because no South Indian meal begins without it.

Then the gravies show up uninvited. Avakaya claims its space no matter how full the platter. Kara chutney and gunpowder stand between your rice and boredom.
