Sub. Protest about deployment of Central Reserve Police Force for violating lockdown

Sir,

We take strong objection both to the request for and the deployment of Central Reserve Police Force in Goa statedly to discipline the people who are said to be loitering on the streets in various localities of Goa. Deployment of CRPF in Goa, only goes to show that we are treating a humanitarian crisis as law and order problem and intending to use force to handle the crisis, without realizing that it will not work and will in fact cause further human rights violations. Deploying CRPF in Goa could lead to uncontrollable civil unrest if hungry citizens are met with by CRPF ‘disciplining’.

People are on the roads on account of lack of clarity and confusion due to constantly changing announcements about supply of essential commodities and services, with no real systematic access to food. Their anxiety and desperation levels are high. When food is not available, it leads to public anger, and as the scarcity increases, looting and violence takes place.

To blame this situation on the people on the roads is to absolve the State’s own responsibility to multilingually disseminate information about COVID-19 and the measures being taken in Goa and the failure to comply with the human right to food security of the people. It is about placing the onus on the weakest sections of society who have no choice but to be on the roads to get their survival needs. It is about not listening with compassion and empathy to the poor and the marginalized. The primary place for the CRPF in the current situation should have been in assisting the supply chain in disaster management – ensuring a robust service delivery of essentials, and helping the stranded people get home.
We do sincerely hope that the Government understands that humanitarian crises require humanitarian approach and solution.

Sending a protest letter that citizens are signing to protest the way this govt is responding to the crisis.

HUMANITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS. 💖

Hello, a bunch of us concerned citizens compromising of volunteers from Sensible Earth, The Offbeat Goa group, Soul Travelling and many more, are looking to address the needs of the poor, old, vulnerable and disabled citizens who may be in need of essentials, be it medicines, food items etc.
At the moment we are in the process of setting up a central helpline number along with the CCP of Panjim. The CCP will be organizing vans, materials and delivery drivers for the localities of Panjim, Taleigaon & Dona Paula.
We are looking to extend this service all across Goa, and already in the process of identifying and signing up volunteers in every part that can drive and deliver these.
What we need from all our hotelier and restaurant friends is, help with the supplies. If your organization has any perishable or non-perishable items like Rice, Dal, Atta, Tea, Sugar, Milk, Salt, Basic Spices, Fish, Fruits or Vegetables to donate, we will be really grateful. Or even if your organization can donate cooked meals for the daily wage earners or senior citizens that will definitely need these, we will be more than happy. If you are willing to support us with this, please do reply to me with all the items that you can provide, as well as the quantities and the person to get in touch with to collect the same.
In case they are cooked meals, then please let me know the following:

1. How many meals you can provide in a day.
2. Whether they can be served at your hotel itself ( in case we have identified groups that can come there)
3. The timings for when you can serve or we can have the meals collected.
4. The dates for which you can provide the meals.
5. Any other relevant information that we may need.

In case you have any further queries please feel free to call or message me on +91 99203 55377 or email me on [email protected]
