As the monsoon draws to a close, the fishing ban has been lifted so the fisherman are back out to sea from early morning until dusk 🌊
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As we live in a quaint fishing village we are surrounded by this treasured trade. We’re so lucky to have fresh fish right on our door step but what we, as consumers fail to realise is the sheer hard work that goes into supplying and making that perfect fish curry!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This generation of fisherman are now worried that this will soon be a dying trade. The new generation have moved on as there are now more opportunities than ever before! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The future is unclear. So in the mean time, we continue to capture such moments and give thanks to the fisherman for their dedication and love for the sea 🙏

Kerala tales...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Kallu in Malayalam translate to Toddy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Toddy is a mild alcoholic delight in Kerala. Made from the sap of coconut palms 🌴
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Freshly harvested toddy is traditionally collected by tappers, who scamper to the top of the trees to retrieve the sap in large clay pots. It’s then left for a day to ferment, then soon after it will be served at local shanty toddy shops.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Traditionally you’ll find such toddy shops on the side of the road in wooden shacks tucked away with one small sign like the one above which translates to ‘toddy’.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here, toddy is washed down with an array of local delicacies including fish head, tapioca, spicy duck curry and beef fry.
